Artikel ni ikut urutan keputusan sebenar: extension, dokumen MYNIC, nama, pemilikan, baru plan hosting. Habis dengan checklist sebelum kau bayar setahun awal.

Beza .com, .com.my dan .my, dan berapa harganya

Tiga pilihan ni bukan sama darjat dari segi kelayakan. .com terbuka kepada sesiapa tanpa dokumen. .com.my dikhaskan untuk organisasi komersial, dan MYNIC sebagai pentadbir domain .my akan semak dokumen syarikat kau dulu. .my terbuka lebih luas, termasuk individu.

Extension Siapa layak Dokumen Harga rujukan setahun
.com Sesiapa, mana-mana negara Tiada Dari RM45 (senarai BigDomain)
.com.my Organisasi komersial Malaysia Borang 9, 13, D atau setara RM80 rasmi, RM60 ikut inisiatif SSM
.my Individu, syarikat, warga asing MyKad, pasport atau sijil syarikat Promo tahun pertama sekitar RM99
.org.my Persatuan dan NGO Perakuan Pendaftaran ROS Ikut peruncit

Harga di atas disemak pada 22/08/2026 dari laman MYNIC (mynic.my), laman SSM (ssm.com.my) dan senarai peruncit BigDomain. MYNIC nyatakan harga tersiar tidak termasuk 8% service tax. Kadar pembaharuan tahun kedua jarang disiarkan, jadi tanya dulu sebelum bayar.

Satu domain sahaja per business, dan ia tak meliputi .my, .biz.my atau .org.my.

Dokumen yang MYNIC minta sebelum .com.my dilepaskan

Bahagian ni yang selalu tergendala. Kau beli hari Isnin, domain duduk status pending sebab dokumen tak lengkap. Sediakan awal, siap dalam sehari dua.

    1. Sahkan entiti kau layak. MYNIC letak .com.my untuk organisasi atau aktiviti komersial. Enterprise dan sole proprietorship berdaftar SSM biasanya diterima, tapi bukti pendaftaran tetap perlu.
    2. Kumpul dokumen syarikat.
    3. Padankan nama domain dengan nama entiti. Semakin jauh nama domain dari nama berdaftar, semakin tinggi peluang permohonan disoal. Kalau brand kau lain dari nama syarikat, siapkan bukti penggunaan brand.
    4. Hantar melalui peruncit rasmi.

Google tulis dalam panduan laman berbilang wilayah bahawa domain kod negara “provide a strong signal to both users and search engines that your site is explicitly intended for a certain country”. Jadi ya, .com.my memang isyarat geotargeting yang kuat, dan ia isyarat percuma.

Tapi baca ayat seterusnya.

Ujian kami senang.

Domain kena berdiri atas akaun owner, bukan akaun web designer

Ini kesilapan paling mahal dalam senarai ni. Web designer daftar domain guna akaun dia sendiri sebab senang.

    1. Buka akaun registrar atas nama kau sendiri. Guna email syarikat yang kau kawal, bukan Gmail peribadi staff dan bukan email vendor.
    2. Semak rekod WHOIS. Cari nama domain kau di laman semakan WHOIS registrar. Kalau nama organisasi atau email pentadbir bukan kau, minta pemindahan sekarang, bukan nanti.
    3. Minta akses DNS, bukan sekadar login WordPress.

Google sendiri kata lokasi server “can be a signal about your site’s intended audience”, tapi terus tambah bahawa ia “not a definitive signal” sebab banyak laman guna CDN atau hosting di negara dengan infrastruktur lebih baik.

Backup host bukan backup kau. HostGator, contohnya, tulis terus dalam polisi backup mereka bahawa “HostGator backups are provided as a courtesy and are not guaranteed” dan pelanggan “are responsible for their own backups”. Polisi yang sama sebut backup automatik mereka hanya simpan seminggu data sebelum ditulis ganti.

Banyak host tempatan pakai bahasa serupa. Maknanya kalau laman kau kena hack dan kau baru perasan tiga minggu kemudian, salinan bersih mungkin dah tiada. Setup minimum yang kami cadang: backup harian di luar server hosting, simpanan sekurang-kurangnya 30 hari, dan satu ujian pemulihan setiap suku tahun. Backup yang tak pernah dipulihkan cuma andaian.

SSL pula dah jadi asas. Sijil percuma Let’s Encrypt disertakan dalam hampir semua panel hosting moden dan diperbaharui automatik. Kau tak perlu bayar melainkan kau nak jaminan organisasi.

Dua masalah timbul. Pertama, kebolehhantaran. Server shared kongsi alamat IP dengan ratusan laman lain, dan kalau salah satu hantar spam, email kau mula masuk folder junk pelanggan. Kau takkan tahu sampai pelanggan kata dia tak terima quotation.

Pindah host bukan kerja besar kalau kau sedia. Kebanyakan host tempatan tawar migrasi percuma untuk pelanggan baru, tapi syarat penuh jarang disiarkan, jadi tanya dalam tiket sebelum bayar.

    1. Turunkan TTL DNS dulu.
Kau nampak laman baru sebelum orang ramai nampak.
    3. Pindah email berasingan. Kalau email masih atas host lama, pindahkan mailbox dulu sebelum tukar rekod MX.
    4. Tukar nameserver, jangan padam akaun lama. Biar akaun lama hidup dua minggu sebagai jaring keselamatan.
    5. Semak semula SSL dan redirect. Sijil baru perlu dikeluarkan, dan redirect www selalunya tercicir.

    Checklist sebelum bayar setahun awal

    • Domain berdaftar atas nama dan email syarikat kau, disahkan melalui WHOIS.
    • Kau ada login registrar sendiri, bukan sekadar login WordPress.
    • Harga pembaharuan tahun kedua disahkan secara bertulis.
    • Had inode, CPU dan entry process disahkan melalui tiket.
    • Backup harian di luar server, simpanan sekurang-kurangnya 30 hari.
    • Email business duduk berasingan dari plan hosting laman.
    • SSL automatik disertakan, semua alamat redirect ke satu versi HTTPS.
    • Syarat migrasi keluar diketahui, termasuk sama ada ada caj.

Bayar setahun awal memang jimat. Cuma buat selepas lapan perkara di atas dijawab.

Soalan lazim tentang domain dan hosting Malaysia

Patut ambil .com atau .com.my dulu?

Ambil .com dulu kalau nama masih ada, sebab ia paling mudah diingat dan fleksibel kalau kau berkembang keluar Malaysia. Tambah .com.my kalau pelanggan ambil berat tentang identiti tempatan.

      Berapa harga sebenar .com.my setahun?

Laman SSM menyatakan RM60 setahun melalui inisiatif Malaysia Businesses & Companies Go.MY untuk business yang baru berdaftar, berbanding RM80 harga biasa.

Google sendiri kata lokasi server bukan isyarat muktamad. Betulkan gambar dan cache dulu.

      Plan unlimited hosting tu benar?

Kenapa email business tak patut duduk atas plan shared?

Sebab reputasi IP dikongsi. Kalau jiran server kau hantar spam, email kau masuk folder junk pelanggan tanpa kau sedar. Selain itu, bila hosting laman bermasalah, email tumbang sekali. Guna Google Workspace atau Microsoft 365 berasingan.

      Berbaloi bayar hosting setahun awal?

    • Domain and Hosting in Malaysia: How to Choose for Your Business (2026)

Short answer: Take the .com if the name is free and add a .com.my when local credibility matters. MYNIC checks your SSM documents before releasing a .com.my, and SSM lists RM60 a year through its joint initiative against the RM80 standard rate. Shared hosting at RM9.99 to RM55.99 a month covers a normal company site. What decides everything later is whose account the domain sits in.

A restaurant group in Penang asked us to move their site to a faster host. The move took two hours. Getting the domain released from the freelancer who registered it in 2019 took eleven weeks.

The monthly cost is small, so the decision gets made fast and the consequences arrive years later.

This guide follows the order you decide in: extension, MYNIC paperwork, ownership, name, then the plan, ending with a checklist to run before you pay for a year.

What .com, .com.my and .my cost, and who can register each

These three are not interchangeable. A .com is open to anyone and needs no paperwork. A .com.my is reserved for commercial organisations, and MYNIC, the registry for .my domains, checks your company documents first. A .my is open to individuals as well as companies.

Extension Who qualifies Documents Reference price a year
.com Anyone, any country None From RM45 (BigDomain listing)
.com.my Malaysian commercial organisations Borang 9, 13, D or equivalent RM80 standard, RM60 via SSM
.my Individuals, companies, foreigners MyKad, passport or company certificate Around RM99 first year
.org.my Societies and NGOs Registrar of Societies certificate Varies by reseller

Prices checked on 22/08/2026 against mynic.my, ssm.com.my and the published BigDomain reseller list. MYNIC states published prices exclude 8% service tax. Renewal rates are rarely shown on sales pages, so ask before you buy.

The SSM angle is worth knowing because few people mention it. SSM and MYNIC run a joint programme called Malaysia Businesses & Companies Go.MY, and the SSM page states a newly registered business can take one .COM.MY name at RM60 a year instead of RM80. One domain per business, excluding .my, .biz.my and .org.my.

The documents MYNIC asks for before releasing a .com.my

Most delays here are paperwork, not policy. The domain sits pending while someone hunts for a form. Prepare in advance and approval usually lands in a day or two. If you registered with SSM recently, check the RM60 rate first.

      1. Confirm the entity qualifies. MYNIC assigns .com.my to commercial organisations. SSM-registered enterprises and sole proprietorships are normally accepted, with proof of registration.
      2. Gather the company papers. MYNIC lists Borang 9, 13 or D, or equivalents in its FAQ. For a recent Sdn Bhd, the Section 15 Notice of Registration replaces the old Borang 9.
      3. Match the domain to the registered name. The further it drifts from the registered entity, the more likely the application gets queried. Have brand usage evidence ready if the two differ.
      4. Apply through an appointed reseller. The reseller runs verification and submits to MYNIC on your behalf.
      5. Keep copies. The same documents come back at renewal and whenever ownership changes.

Whether a .com.my actually helps you rank in Malaysia

The honest answer sits in Google’s own documentation, not in an agency deck. In its guidance on multi-regional sites, Google says country-code domains “provide a strong signal to both users and search engines that your site is explicitly intended for a certain country”. So a .com.my is a real geotargeting signal, free to use.

The same page then says a generic domain like .com can be pointed at a country through other means, which is why plenty of Malaysian businesses rank perfectly well on a .com.

In practice the extension is far from the biggest factor. A complete Google Business Profile, consistent address formatting and steady reviews move local rankings much harder, as we break down in our guide to local SEO for Malaysian businesses. Registering both and redirecting one is a common, cheap answer.

Register the domain in your own account, not your web designer’s

This is the most expensive mistake on the list, and it is usually made with good intentions. The designer registers the domain on their own account because it saves you a step. Years later the number has changed and you are stuck behind a name you assumed you owned.

Technically the registrant on record is the owner, not whoever paid the invoice. If that email belongs to the designer, they approve transfers and receive renewal notices.

      1. Open the registrar account yourself. Use a company email you control, not a staff member’s Gmail and not the vendor’s.
      2. Check the WHOIS record. If the organisation or admin email is not you, start the transfer now rather than at the next dispute.
      3. Ask for DNS access, not just a WordPress login. Whoever controls DNS can move your site and email within minutes.
      4. Turn on transfer lock and auto renew. Renewal notices going to the wrong inbox are a common cause of a week of downtime.
      5. Put it in the contract. One sentence: domain and hosting accounts are registered in the company name and email, handed over in full at project close.
Not sure who actually owns your domain? We review your domain, DNS and hosting setup and tell you what needs fixing first.

Picking a name you will not want to change in three years

A domain is cheap to choose and expensive to replace. Changing it resets part of your search credibility and forces new signage, new cards and dead links everywhere.

Three name types cause most of the regret. Names tied to one town, awkward the moment you open a second branch. Names with hyphens, numbers or abbreviations that cannot survive a phone call. And names one letter away from a larger competitor.

The test we use is simple. Say the name aloud on a call without spelling it. If the other person types it correctly first time, it passes. If you find yourself saying “b for boy, hyphen, the number three”, keep looking.

Check the matching social handles too, because a site name and an Instagram name that disagree make people remember two things. If brand and site are built together, our note on how long a business website takes to build helps you time it.

Shared, cloud and VPS, and the point where moving up pays

Shared hosting means your site lives on one server alongside hundreds of others. Cloud and managed plans give more reliable resources with caching and monitoring built in. A VPS gives a partitioned slice, with full control and full responsibility.

For a normal company site with enquiry forms, a blog and a catalogue, shared hosting is enough. Checking the Exabytes price list on 22/08/2026, the entry plan was listed at RM9.99 a month for 15GB storage, with mid-tier plans between RM36.99 and RM55.99. Those are promotional rates, and the standard prices beside them are far higher.

      Shared, entry planRM10 – RM30
      Shared, business planRM30 – RM60
      Cloud or managedRM60 – RM150
      VPSRM80 – RM250

The cloud and VPS bands above are reasoned estimates from local reseller price lists, not an official rate. They move with RAM, CPU count and whether server management is included.

Three signals say it is time to move up: the site slows at peak hours even with caching on, you start selling online, or the host sends resource warnings. Online stores hit those limits first, and platform choice matters too, which we compare in WooCommerce vs Shopify for Malaysian ecommerce.

Server location and what it really does for Malaysian visitors

Local hosts sell server location hard. It is a genuine advantage, just smaller than the marketing suggests. Google says server location “can be a signal about your site’s intended audience” and then adds that it is “not a definitive signal”, because many sites use CDNs or host where infrastructure is better.

On raw speed, distance matters for the first request. A server in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore answers a Malaysian visitor faster than one in the United States, because the data crosses less undersea cable. The gap is widest on weak mobile connections.

For most SME sites, location is not what makes pages slow. It is the 4MB hero image, ten overlapping plugins and a theme loading three font files. Fix those, put a free CDN in front, then argue about data centres. Our business website checklist covers the rest.

What unlimited means once you read the terms

No hosting plan is truly without limits. What exists is a set of limits not printed on the sales page. Plans advertising unlimited storage or bandwidth are governed by three other numbers: the inode limit, which caps how many files you keep; the concurrent process and CPU caps, which throttle the site when traffic rises; and a fair use clause letting the host move you up a tier.

Check before you buy: open the terms of service and search for inode, entry processes and CPU. If the numbers are not published, raise a ticket. A clear written answer is a good sign, a vague one tells you what the renewal conversation will feel like.

Backups and SSL: what the host covers and what you must own

Your host’s backup is not your backup, and the terms say so. HostGator writes in its backup policy that “HostGator backups are provided as a courtesy and are not guaranteed” and that customers “are responsible for their own backups”. The same policy notes automatic backups keep only a week before overwriting.

Plenty of Malaysian hosts use similar wording. If your site is compromised and you notice three weeks later, the clean copy may already be gone. The minimum we recommend: a daily backup stored off the hosting server, 30 days of retention, and one restore test per quarter. A backup nobody has restored is an assumption.

SSL is settled now. Free Let’s Encrypt certificates ship with almost every modern hosting panel and renew automatically, so there is no reason to pay unless you want organisation validation. Check one thing: every version of your address, with and without www, lands on a single HTTPS version.

Business email does not belong on the cheap shared plan

This one is easy to avoid and constantly ignored. The owner takes the RM9.99 a month shared plan, creates five mailboxes, and considers email handled.

Two problems follow. The first is deliverability. A shared server shares its IP with hundreds of sites, and if one sends spam, your quotations start landing in junk folders. You find out when a client says they never received anything. The second is recovery: when hosting has trouble, email goes down with the site.

Keep email separate from web hosting. Google Workspace Business Starter was listed at around RM29 per user a month on an official partner page we checked on 22/08/2026, and Microsoft 365 has comparable plans. For a team of four that is small money against one deal lost to spam.

Migration, and the checklist to run before you pay for a year

Changing host is not a big job when you prepare. Most Malaysian hosts offer free migration to new customers, but the conditions are rarely published, so ask first.

      1. Lower the DNS TTL first. Set it to 300 seconds a day before the move so changes propagate fast.
      2. Copy the site over and test with a hosts file. You see the new server before the public does.
      3. Move email separately. If mailboxes live with the old host, migrate them before touching MX records.
      4. Switch nameservers, keep the old account. Leave it running two weeks as a safety net.
      5. Re-check SSL and redirects. A new certificate must be issued, and the www redirect usually goes missing.

Checklist before paying for a year

      • Domain registered in your company name and email, verified by WHOIS.
      • You hold the registrar login, not just a WordPress login.
      • Second-year renewal price confirmed in writing.
      • Inode, CPU and entry process limits confirmed by ticket.
      • Daily backups off the server, 30 days of retention.
      • Business email hosted away from the website plan.
      • Automatic SSL included, all addresses on one HTTPS version.
      • Exit migration terms known, including any fee.

Frequently asked questions about domains and hosting in Malaysia

Should I take .com or .com.my first?

Take the .com if the name is free, because it is easiest to remember and most flexible if you expand beyond Malaysia. Add a .com.my when local identity matters to customers. Many businesses register both and redirect one to the other.

What does a .com.my really cost per year?

SSM lists RM60 a year through the Malaysia Businesses & Companies Go.MY initiative for newly registered businesses, against RM80 standard. Resellers add margin, and MYNIC states published prices exclude 8% service tax. Checked 22/08/2026.

My web designer registered the domain. How do I get it back?

Start with a WHOIS lookup to see who the registrant is. Ask the designer to unlock the domain and release the authorisation code. If they refuse, contact the registrar with payment proof and company documents. This can take weeks.

Does a Malaysian server really make my site faster?

For Malaysian visitors, yes, a little, mostly on the first request. The effect is small next to oversized images and plugin bloat. Google itself calls server location a non-definitive signal. Fix images and caching first.

        Are unlimited hosting plans real?

No. The limits still exist, hidden in inode caps, process caps and a fair use clause. Look for those numbers in the terms before you buy. If the host will not put figures in writing, assume the plan is smaller than advertised.

Is my host’s backup good enough on its own?

Usually not. Many hosts state backups are a courtesy and not guaranteed, with a week of retention. Run your own daily backup to off-server storage, keep 30 days, and test a restore every quarter.

Why should business email sit away from the shared plan?

Because IP reputation is shared. If a neighbour on that server sends spam, your mail lands in junk folders without warning. And when hosting has problems, email goes down with it. Use Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 separately.

Is paying a year upfront worth it?

It is worth it once you have confirmed renewal pricing, resource limits, backup terms and exit migration conditions. First-year discounts are steep because renewal rates are much higher. Get the second-year figure in writing first.

Conclusion: domains and hosting for a Malaysian business

Most of this is about control rather than price. Pick a name that survives a phone call, register it in your own company account, and confirm the second-year price before the first-year discount wins you over. Shared hosting at RM9.99 to RM55.99 a month carries most SME sites, and a .com.my at RM60 through the SSM initiative is worth taking if you qualify. Keep business email off the website plan, and keep your own backups.

      • Tingkatkan Conversion Website: Lead Lebih Tanpa Tambah Traffic

Jualan senyap, jadi keputusannya tambah iklan. Bajet naik, traffic naik, tapi bilangan enquiry betul-betul tak bergerak.

Traffic itu input yang mahal. Conversion pula benda yang kau dah bayar. Kalau 400 orang masuk website bulan ni dan 4 orang tanya harga, gandakan ad spend bermakna kau bayar lebih setiap bulan lepas ni. Naikkan 4 tu jadi 8 pula, kos dia satu hujung minggu, sekali sahaja.

Artikel ni tunjuk cara kira rate sebenar kau, di mana orang tercicir, apa yang biasanya rosak, dan macam mana nak test bila traffic kau terlalu kecil untuk statistik.

Kira conversion rate semasa sebelum ubah apa-apa

Formulanya conversion bahagi sessions, darab 100.

Bukan page view, bukan download brochure yang kau tak follow up pun. Kira benda lembut macam tu, dashboard nampak sihat sedangkan kalendar kau kosong.

Ambil data 90 hari, bukan 7 hari.

        • Minimum 90 hari, kalau tak kau baca bunyi bising.

        6.6%
        median conversion rate landing page
        3.8%-12.3%
        julat antara median industri
        90 hari
        tempoh minimum sebelum nilai

Baca angka tu betul-betul sebelum panik.

Dua tool, dua soalan berbeza. GA4 tunjuk di mana orang keluar. Tool rakaman tunjuk kenapa.

        1. Tanda conversion sebenar sebagai key event dalam GA4. Borang dihantar, klik keluar ke wa.me, klik pada link tel:. Sebelum ni siap, semua angka lain hiasan sahaja.
        2. Bina funnel exploration. Landing page, page servis, page contact, key event.

Kumpul dua minggu rakaman dulu sebelum tengok. Kalau kau tengok masa team sendiri tengah buka website, sampel tu dah tercemar.

Tujuh benda yang selalu rosakkan conversion website SME

Lepas cukup banyak audit, senarai yang sama keluar berulang. Hampir semuanya tak perlukan redesign.

Masalah Apa pelawat buat Cara baiki
Tawaran tak jelas di bahagian atas Baca dua baris, tak faham kau jual apa, keluar Satu ayat: buat apa, untuk siapa, kawasan mana
Harga disorok walaupun dia datang cari harga Selak tiga page, mengalah, buka website pesaing Letak julat harga atau harga bermula
Borang tanya terlalu banyak awal-awal Nampak sembilan ruangan, tutup tab Nama, nombor telefon, satu baris pasal kerja
Tiada pilihan WhatsApp Tak nak isi borang, tak nak email, terus keluar Butang WhatsApp melekat pada skrin mobile
Page mobile lembab Langsung tak sempat nampak page Mampatkan gambar, buang script tak guna
Tiada tanda kepercayaan Tak percaya apa-apa atas page tu Review bernama, gambar sebenar, nombor SSM
Langkah seterusnya tak jelas Baca semua, tapi tak buat apa-apa Satu arahan, diulang tiga kali

        Book free consultation

Website convert elok, tapi tiada siapa balas enquiry tu

Kegagalan jenis ni tak pernah naik atas dashboard, sebab dashboard kata conversion dah berlaku. Borang memang dihantar. Cuma tiada siapa balas selama dua hari.

        3. Namakan satu orang bertugas setiap hari. Tanggungjawab kongsi bermakna tiada siapa balas pukul 8 malam Sabtu.
        4. Rekod masa balasan pertama.

        Sekarang: 2% website, 20% close4 customer
        Website dibaiki: 3% website, 20% close6 customer
Follow up dibaiki: 2% website, 30% close6 customer
        Dua-dua dibaiki: 3% website, 30% close9 customer

Kebanyakan owner habiskan satu suku tahun pada baris kedua dan tak sentuh pun baris ketiga. Buat kerja follow up dulu.

Susun keutamaan ikut usaha lawan impak

        Pembaikan Usaha Impak Bila
Butang WhatsApp melekat atas mobile 1 jam Tinggi Minggu ni
Terbitkan julat harga Setengah hari campur satu perdebatan Tinggi Bulan ni
Mampatkan semua gambar Setengah hari Sederhana Bulan ni
Tambah enam review bernama dengan gambar 2 hari Sederhana Bulan ni
Tulis semula headline homepage 2 hari Tak pasti sebelum diuji Suku depan

Cara test bila traffic kau terlalu kecil untuk A/B test

Ni bahagian yang kebanyakan panduan conversion langkau. Dengan 400 pelawat sebulan, kau tak boleh A/B test. Langsung.

Matematiknya keras.

        • Simpan log perubahan bertarikh.

Soalan lazim pasal tingkatkan conversion website

Apa yang dikira conversion untuk business servis?

Apa-apa tindakan yang letak orang sebenar depan team sales kau: borang enquiry dihantar, butang WhatsApp ditekan, nombor telefon ditekan, atau appointment ditempah. Signup newsletter dan download PDF tak dikira melainkan ada orang follow up setiap satu. Kalau kau kira tindakan lembut, dashboard naik tapi jualan tak naik.

Berapa lama patut ukur sebelum putuskan satu page rosak?

Sembilan puluh hari.

English version here: Conversion Rate Optimisation Malaysia. • Conversion Rate Optimisation Malaysia: More Leads, Same Traffic

Short answer: Most Malaysian SMEs with a lead problem buy more traffic when the cheaper fix sits on the site they already have. Measure your current conversion rate over 90 days, compare it against the 6.6% median Unbounce reports across 41,000 landing pages, then fix the enquiry-to-customer step first. Below roughly 1,000 visitors a month you cannot A/B test anything, so just ship the better version.

The conversation usually goes the same way. Sales are flat, so the plan becomes more ads. Budget goes up, sessions go up, real enquiries barely move.

Traffic is the expensive input. Conversion is the one you have already paid for. If 400 people land on your site this month and 4 enquire, doubling ad spend costs you money every month after that. Getting those 4 to 8 costs one focused weekend, once.

This article covers how to measure your real rate, where to look for the drop-off, what usually breaks, and how to test honestly when your traffic is too small for statistics.

Work out your current conversion rate before you change anything

The formula is conversions divided by sessions, times 100. The argument is always about what counts.

For a Malaysian service business, a conversion is a form submitted, a WhatsApp button tapped, a phone number tapped, or a quote requested. It is not a page view or a brochure download you never follow up on. Count soft actions and your dashboard looks healthy while your calendar stays empty.

Measure over 90 days, not 7. One viral post, one public holiday, one week of Raya, and a weekly rate swings by half.

Then split the number by device and by channel. A site converting at 4% on desktop and 0.8% on mobile has a mobile problem, not a conversion problem. A site converting at 6% from Google and 0.5% from Facebook has a traffic quality problem on one channel. Our guide on what actually counts as a lead is worth reading before you settle your definition.

          The short version

          • Count only actions a human on your team has to respond to.
          • Ninety days minimum, or you are reading noise.
          • Always split by device and channel before drawing a conclusion.

What a realistic conversion rate looks like in your industry

Unbounce publishes the largest public dataset on this. Its Conversion Benchmark Report analysed 41,000 landing pages carrying 464 million visitors, and reported a median conversion rate of 6.6% across all industries, with industry medians ranging from 3.8% to 12.3%.

          6.6%
          median landing page conversion rate
          3.8%-12.3%
          range between industry medians
          90 days
          minimum window before you judge

Read that carefully. Those are dedicated landing pages built for one offer and fed by paid traffic. Your homepage carries job applicants, suppliers, customers checking your address, and your own staff. Measured the same way it will always look worse, and that is arithmetic, not failure.

There is also a local distortion. Plenty of Malaysian sites push people to WhatsApp, and if that tap is not tracked as an event the site reports near zero conversions while the sales team is busy. Check that before you rebuild anything.

The honest benchmark is your own site last quarter. Beating 6.6% means nothing if the enquiries are unqualified, and 2% is fine if they close at RM40,000 each.

Finding where people drop off using GA4 and a session recording tool

Two tools, two questions. GA4 shows where people leave. A recording tool shows why.

          1. Mark real conversions as key events in GA4. Form submission, outbound click to wa.me, click on a tel: link. Until that is done every other number is decoration.
          2. Build a funnel exploration. Landing page, service page, contact page, key event. GA4 shows the percentage lost at each step.
          3. Open the Landing page report and add device as a secondary dimension. The mobile to desktop gap is usually the loudest signal in the account.
          4. Install a recording tool. Microsoft Clarity is free with no session cap, which makes it the sensible default for an SME. Hotjar has a free tier if you prefer it.
          5. Watch 20 sessions on your worst page. Not 200. Twenty is enough for patterns to repeat.
          6. Look for rage clicks and dead clicks. Somebody tapping a button that does nothing on mobile is a fix you can ship the same day.

Collect two weeks of recordings before you watch. Watching live while your own team browses the site pollutes the sample.

The seven things that usually break conversion on a Malaysian SME site

After enough audits the same list keeps appearing. Almost none of it needs a redesign.

Problem What the visitor does Fix
Unclear offer above the fold Reads two lines, cannot tell what you sell, leaves One sentence: what you do, who for, where
Price hidden when they came for price Hunts three pages, gives up, checks a competitor Publish a range or a starting figure
Form asks too much too early Sees nine fields, closes the tab Name, phone, one line about the job
No WhatsApp option Will not fill a form, will not email, leaves Sticky WhatsApp button on mobile
Slow mobile pages Never sees the page at all Compress images, cut unused scripts
No trust signals Believes nothing on the page Named reviews, real photos, SSM number
Unclear next step Reads everything, does nothing One instruction, repeated three times

The price row causes the most arguments and is the one worth winning. If somebody searched your service plus the word price, hiding it is not lead qualification, it is friction. A range with conditions attached filters out the wrong enquiries and earns trust from the right ones. Our practical checklist for a good business website covers the structural side.

Not sure where your site is losing people?Send us the URL and your GA4 access. We will tell you the three things costing you the most enquiries, free.

          Book free consultation

The site converts fine, but nobody answered the enquiry

This failure never shows on a dashboard, because the dashboard says the conversion happened. The form was submitted. Nobody replied for two days.

The Lead Response Management study, run by Professor James Oldroyd on an InsideSales.com dataset of more than 15,000 leads and 100,000 call attempts, found the odds of qualifying a lead dropped 21 times when first contact came at 30 minutes instead of 5. Between 5 and 10 minutes the odds already fell fourfold.

In Malaysia the effect is sharper. The enquiry arrives on WhatsApp, where people expect a reply in minutes, and plenty of it lands after 9pm. A form emailing a shared inbox nobody opens on weekends is a leak you paid Meta or Google to create.

          1. Route every submission to a phone, not an inbox. A WhatsApp or Telegram alert to a named person, not a sales@ address four people ignore.
          2. Send an instant auto-reply. One line confirming receipt and when a human will respond holds the lead for an hour.
          3. Name one owner per day. Shared responsibility means nobody replies at 8pm on a Saturday.
          4. Log first response time. If you measure nothing else this quarter, measure this.

Fixing enquiry-to-customer is usually worth more than fixing click-to-enquiry

Take a site with 1,000 visitors a month converting at 2%, and a sales process closing 20% of enquiries. That is 20 enquiries and 4 customers.

Lifting the site from 2% to 3% is real work: new copy, new form, faster pages, maybe weeks of it. It gets you 30 enquiries and 6 customers.

Lifting the close rate from 20% to 30% is a follow-up discipline. Reply in ten minutes, call twice instead of once, send the quote the same day. It also gets 6 customers, and costs nothing but attention.

          Now: 2% site, 20% close4 customers
          Site fixed: 3% site, 20% close6 customers
          Follow-up fixed: 2% site, 30% close6 customers
          Both fixed: 3% site, 30% close9 customers

Most owners spend the quarter on the second row and never touch the third. Do the follow-up work first. It is faster, it is free, and it tells you whether your enquiries were ever worth anything.

Mobile speed is a conversion problem before it is a technical one

Google published data from roughly 3,700 mobile sites in 2016 stating that 53% of visits are likely to be abandoned if pages take longer than 3 seconds to load. Ten years on, Malaysian SME sites still fail this routinely, and the causes are consistent.

A hero video autoplaying on mobile. Product photos exported from the designer at 4MB each. Five tracking scripts nobody uses. A chat widget loading before the text. Each was added by somebody reasonable, and together they push a page past four seconds on 4G in a Klang Valley basement carpark, which is exactly where people check their phones.

Test on mobile data, not on office wifi, and fix the images first. Our guide to Core Web Vitals in plain language explains which numbers matter and which you can ignore.

Prioritising fixes by effort against impact

Everything in the one-hour rows ships this week, before anybody schedules a design meeting. A full rebuild is the most expensive way to test a hypothesis you have not written down, so it stays at the bottom until the cheap fixes run out. For pages built for paid traffic the rules are tighter, and we cover them in our guide to landing pages that convert in Malaysia.

How to test when your traffic is too low for A/B testing

Here is the part most conversion advice skips. With 400 visitors a month you cannot A/B test. At all.

The arithmetic is unforgiving. To detect a move from 2% to 3% at the usual 95% confidence and 80% power you need roughly 3,000 visitors per version, about 6,000 in total. At 400 a month that is more than a year for one test, by which time your offer, prices and competitors have all changed. A smaller lift, 2% to 2.4%, needs closer to 20,000 per version.

          What to do instead

          • Make the obviously better version and ship it. A 4 field form beats a 9 field form. You do not need a test to know that.
          • Compare 8 to 12 weeks before against 8 to 12 weeks after, and accept it is directional, not proof.
          • Change one meaningful thing at a time so the before and after is readable.
          • Keep a dated change log. In six months it is the only record of what caused what.
          • Replace statistics with evidence: 20 session recordings, 5 calls to recent customers.

Anyone selling A/B testing on 400 visitors a month is selling a report, not a result. Spend the money on fixes, and revisit testing past roughly 10,000 visitors a month. Building that traffic is a separate job, covered in our guide on generating leads with digital marketing.

Frequently asked questions about conversion rate optimisation in Malaysia

What counts as a conversion for a service business?

Any action that puts a real person in front of your sales team: a submitted enquiry form, a tapped WhatsApp button, a tapped phone number, a booked appointment. Newsletter signups and PDF downloads do not count unless somebody follows up on every one. Count soft actions and your dashboard improves while your revenue does not.

What is a good conversion rate for a Malaysian SME website?

Unbounce reports a median of 6.6% across 41,000 landing pages, with industry medians between 3.8% and 12.3%. Those are dedicated landing pages fed by paid traffic. A business homepage carrying mixed traffic normally sits lower, and that is not a fault. The rate worth beating is your own from last quarter.

How long should I measure before deciding a page is broken?

Ninety days. One week of data in a small business is noise, since a public holiday, a viral post or a school break can swing the number by half. Ninety days smooths that out and still reflects your current offer and prices.

Should I show prices on my website?

In most cases yes, as a range with the conditions attached. If a visitor searched your service plus the word price, hiding it does not qualify the lead, it sends them to a competitor who published theirs. A range filters out enquiries you cannot serve profitably.

How many fields should my enquiry form have?

Three or four. Name, phone number, and one line describing what they need. Everything else can be asked in the reply, when the person is already talking to you. Budget dropdowns and company size are questions for your CRM, not for a stranger deciding whether to contact you.

Do I need a paid tool to see where visitors drop off?

No. GA4 is free and shows where people leave. Microsoft Clarity is free with no session limit and shows why, including rage clicks and dead clicks. Between those two you have everything an SME needs. Paid tools become useful later, once you have enough traffic for real experiments.

            Can I A/B test with 400 visitors a month?

No. Detecting a move from 2% to 3% at normal confidence needs roughly 3,000 visitors per version, about 6,000 in total, which is more than a year at that traffic level. Make the obviously better version, ship it, and compare 8 to 12 weeks before against after.

Is it better to spend on conversion work or on more ads?

Fix conversion first if you already get more than a few hundred visitors a month, because every improvement makes all future ad spend cheaper per lead. If almost nobody visits, no amount of conversion work helps and you need traffic first. The dividing line sits around 500 monthly visitors.

Conclusion: start with the visitors you already paid for

Measure your real rate over 90 days before touching anything, then compare it to your own last quarter rather than to the 6.6% median. Ship the one-hour fixes this week, put a phone alert on every enquiry, and treat first response time as the number that matters most. With a few hundred visitors a month you are making judgement calls, not running experiments, so make the obviously better version anyway. Versi Bahasa Melayu di sini: Tingkatkan Conversion Website. • Website Maintenance Cost in Malaysia: The Real Annual Bill

Short answer: Domain and hosting alone run about RM300 to RM800 a year. That is the floor, not the bill. Realistic website maintenance cost in Malaysia is RM800 to RM2,000 a year for a brochure site, RM2,500 to RM6,000 for a lead-gen site, and RM6,000 to RM15,000 for an online store. The gap comes from licences, backups, monitoring and who does the monthly updates.

Most owners budget for a website once. They approve the build, pay the invoice, watch it go live, and file it under done. Then month thirteen arrives with four small charges nobody planned.

None of those charges are unfair. They were always going to happen. They just never appeared on the quotation, because a build quote covers building, not keeping it alive afterwards.

This article lists every line in that bill, gives three budget tiers, and covers what vendors rarely write down: what happens if you pay nothing.

The ten line items a build quote leaves out

An annual website bill is not one payment. It is a scatter of small ones landing in different months, which is why it feels invisible right up until they all arrive together.

For a normal WordPress business site the full list runs: domain renewal, hosting renewal, SSL certificate, paid plugin licences, theme licence, offsite backup storage, security monitoring, uptime monitoring, the labour of updating WordPress and plugins, and content edits across the year. Ten lines. Most build quotes mention two.

            The short version

            • RM300 to RM800 a year covers domain and hosting, nothing else.
            • Almost every paid plugin and theme licence renews automatically.
            • The largest cost in maintenance is human time, not subscriptions.
            • A backup sitting on the same server as your site is not a backup.

Split the bill into two groups and it gets easier to plan. The first group runs itself as long as your card is valid, and that half is cheap and predictable. The second group needs a person sitting at a keyboard, and that is what decides whether your year costs RM800 or RM8,000.

Domain renewal and the hosting price jump after year one

Domains are the easy part. Exabytes lists .MY at RM89 a year and .COM.MY at RM59.90 for registration, noting that renewal reverts to standard pricing after the first term. Budget RM60 to RM150 a year and you are covered.

Hosting is where owners get caught. The price in the advertisement is usually a first-year promotional rate, often on a three-year contract paid upfront. Year two returns to list price, and a jump of two to three times is normal in this industry.

            RM300-RM800
            domain and hosting per year
            RM89
            .MY domain per year (Exabytes)
            2-3x
            typical hosting renewal jump

When you compare hosting plans, ignore the first-year number. Ask support what year two costs. A provider who will not put that figure in writing has told you something already.

One more thing owners forget: whose name is on the account. If domain and hosting sit under your vendor’s account, you pay a markup and you are tied to them the day you want to move. Both should be registered to your business from day one, even if the vendor handles billing and technical work.

SSL is free, backups are not, and where backups actually live

SSL should cost nothing. Let’s Encrypt states in its FAQ that it does not charge a fee for certificates, valid for 90 days. Most Malaysian hosts offer it inside cPanel with automatic renewal. If a vendor bills RM300 a year for a standard certificate, ask what you are paying for.

Paid certificates still have a place, usually for larger stores wanting a warranty or organisation validation. For most sites, free is fine.

Backups are where owners most often fool themselves. Nearly every host offers daily backups, and nearly all store them on the same infrastructure as your site. When that server fails, the backups go with it.

            1. Backups must be offsite. Google Drive, S3, anywhere that is not your hosting server.
            2. Backups must be automatic. Anything relying on your memory fails in the month you are busiest.
            3. Backups must be tested. Restore to staging yearly. An untested backup is a file you hope works.
            4. Keep 30 days minimum. Hacked sites are usually infected for weeks before anyone notices.

Proper offsite backup runs RM150 to RM900 a year depending on database size and snapshot frequency. For a busy store, plan for the expensive end.

Plugin and theme licences that renew whether you notice or not

This category is easy to miss because the amounts are small and spread across the calendar. Elementor lists its Essential plan for one website at USD49 a year. WP Rocket lists a single-site licence at USD59 a year, and its pricing page states the licence renews automatically.

A typical Malaysian business site runs two to six paid plugins: page builder, caching, forms, SEO, backups, sometimes booking or membership. Added up, that lands around RM400 to RM1,500 a year depending on the count and the ringgit rate when you are charged.

The danger here is not really the cost. It is a licence lapsing unnoticed. The plugin keeps working, it just stops receiving security updates. The site looks fine for months while a hole patched for everyone else stays open on yours.

Keep one spreadsheet with plugin name, renewal date, price and card charged. Ten minutes of work that saves a day of panic later.

            Book free consultation

Skipping updates is how business sites get defaced

WordPress core, themes and plugins release updates throughout the year. Some add features. Most of them patch security holes that have already been disclosed in public.

That disclosure is the part owners miss. When a plugin vulnerability is patched, its details become public. Within days, bots scan the internet for sites still running the old version. Those bots do not know who you are and do not care how small your business is.

Malaysian SME sites are rarely hacked because someone targeted them. They are hacked because they were found. The result is usually not dramatic data theft but spam pages for pharmaceuticals and gambling injected into your site, or a quiet redirect sending mobile visitors elsewhere.

Doing updates properly is not clicking a button. It is backing up first, updating on staging, checking that forms and checkout still work, then pushing live. An hour a month is enough for a brochure site. For a store with payment and shipping integrations, plan two to four hours a month.

That is why this line costs the most. At normal Malaysian developer rates, managed updates run RM600 to RM4,800 a year depending on site complexity.

Security monitoring, uptime alerts, and the bill after a hack

Uptime monitoring is the cheapest thing here and the most often skipped. Free services ping your site every five minutes and alert you when it goes down. Without one you depend on customers telling you, and they usually do not. They go to a competitor.

Security monitoring scans files for suspicious changes and blocks bad traffic before it ever reaches WordPress. Paid single-site plans sit around RM150 to RM1,200 a year.

Now the uncomfortable part. If a site is hacked and you hold a clean, tested backup, recovery takes hours and costs RM1,500 to RM5,000 for cleanup, malware removal, and a review request to Google if the site got flagged.

            Uptime monitoring per yearRM0 – RM200
            Security monitoring per yearRM150 – RM1,200
            Cleaning up after a hackRM1,500 – RM5,000
            Rebuilding with no backupRM3,500 – RM8,000

If no backup exists or none restore, you are not cleaning. You are rebuilding, and the price returns to the original build range of RM3,500 to RM8,000 for a full business website. A year of monitoring costs a fraction of that.

Content edits, and choosing between a retainer and paying ad hoc

Every business changes small things during the year. A new phone number, a service added, prices raised in a package, a team photo swapped, an expired promotion pulled. Each is minor. Over twelve months it becomes real work.

Two ways to pay for it, and the answer depends on how often your site changes, not how large your business is.

            Model Typical cost Suits Risk
Ad hoc, pay per job RM120 to RM250 per hour Under 6 changes a year, simple site Nobody owns updates. Slow response in an emergency.
Monthly retainer RM250 to RM1,200 a month Monthly changes, live traffic or ads running You pay in quiet months too.
Annual care plan RM1,200 to RM6,000 a year Managed updates and backups, you edit content Capped hours. Read the scope carefully.

Our call: if your site takes leads or has ad spend pointed at it, take the retainer. Downtime on a site burning ad budget costs more than the fee. For a brochure that rarely changes, ad hoc works if automatic backups and scheduled updates are in place. The warning signs of a site needing a redesign usually show up first as deferred maintenance.

What happens if you pay nothing at all

Owners think this quietly and rarely ask a vendor. The site does not die at once. It decays in a predictable order.

            1. Months 1 to 6. Nothing happens. The site runs normally. This is the misleading part.
            2. Months 6 to 12. Plugin licences lapse and updates stop. Some plugins start conflicting with the newer PHP version your host rolled out.
            3. Months 12 to 18. The enquiry form quietly stops sending email. You find out when a customer calls asking why nobody replied.
            4. Months 18 to 24. A bot finds an old vulnerability. Spam pages get injected or the site redirects. Google flags it and traffic drops.
            5. When the domain expires. The site disappears, business email on that domain dies too, and recovery depends on the registrar grace period.

The costliest item is usually not the hack. It is the form that died silently for six months. Nobody can count those leads, because no record exists.

Recovery is not symmetrical with prevention. A maintained year on a lead-gen site runs RM2,500 to RM6,000. One cleanup after a hack runs RM1,500 to RM5,000, a rebuild with no backup RM3,500 to RM8,000. Save one year, repay it in one incident.

Three tiers and a one-page annual budget you can copy

These three profiles cover most Malaysian businesses, and what separates them is how much can break.

Brochure site. Five to ten pages, rarely edited. Annual bill RM800 to RM2,000. Many web design packages cover year one.

Lead-gen site. Blog, campaign landing pages, tracking, CRM or WhatsApp integration. Annual bill RM2,500 to RM6,000. These usually have ads pointed at them, so downtime costs real money.

Online store. Payment gateway, shipping, inventory, customer accounts. Annual bill RM6,000 to RM15,000. Every update is tested through checkout, and the platform shapes the bill, as in our WooCommerce and Shopify piece.

            Line item Brochure Lead-gen Store
            Domain renewal RM60-RM150 RM60-RM150 RM60-RM150
            Hosting renewal RM240-RM650 RM600-RM1,500 RM1,200-RM3,600
            SSL RM0 RM0 RM0-RM400
            Plugin and theme licences RM0-RM500 RM400-RM1,200 RM800-RM1,500
            Offsite backups RM150-RM300 RM200-RM600 RM400-RM900
            Uptime and security monitoring RM0-RM350 RM150-RM800 RM400-RM1,400
            Update and test labour RM600-RM1,200 RM1,200-RM3,000 RM2,400-RM4,800
            Content edits RM0-RM400 RM400-RM1,200 RM600-RM2,000
            Annual total RM800-RM2,000 RM2,500-RM6,000 RM6,000-RM15,000

            How to use this table

            • Low end if you update the site yourself, high end if a vendor does it.
            • Keep a contingency worth one month.
            • Under RM800 total means the full bill has not arrived.

Before signing a care plan, ask for scope in writing: hours per month, emergency response, where backups live, who holds the accounts. A cheap price without those answers means nothing, as in what an RM500 website buys.

Frequently asked questions about website maintenance cost

How much does website maintenance actually cost per year in Malaysia?

Budget RM800 to RM2,000 a year for a brochure site, RM2,500 to RM6,000 for a lead-gen site, and RM6,000 to RM15,000 for an online store. If you pay only for domain and hosting and do the rest yourself, you can run at RM300 to RM800.

Why did my hosting bill go up in the second year?

Because the first-year price is usually promotional. Year two returns to list price, and a jump of two to three times is normal. Before signing, ask support what year two costs. A provider who will not put that in writing should worry you.

Do I need to pay for an SSL certificate?

For most business websites, no. Let’s Encrypt states in its FAQ that it does not charge a fee for certificates, and those are valid for 90 days. Most hosts renew them automatically. Paid certificates are worth it only for organisation validation or a warranty.

Are my host’s backups good enough?

Usually not. Most host backups sit on the same infrastructure as your site, so when that server fails, the backups go with it. Keep a copy on Google Drive or S3, make it automatic, and restore to staging yearly to confirm it works.

What happens if I never update WordPress?

The site does not die immediately, which is the misleading part. Within six to twelve months licences lapse and updates stop. After that, bots scanning the internet find an old vulnerability already disclosed publicly, and spam pages get injected into your site.

Monthly retainer or pay when something breaks?

If your site takes leads or has ad spend pointed at it, take the retainer. Downtime on a site burning ad budget costs more than the fee. For a brochure that rarely changes, ad hoc at RM120 to RM250 an hour makes more sense.

What does it cost to recover a hacked website?

With a clean, tested backup, cleanup runs RM1,500 to RM5,000 including malware removal and a review request to Google. Without a backup that restores, you are rebuilding, which returns to the RM3,500 to RM8,000 range for a business website.

Does maintenance include SEO and new content?

No. Maintenance keeps the site alive, secure and working. SEO and new content are marketing work on a separate budget. A care plan covers small edits such as a phone number or price. If a vendor claims SEO is included, ask what they do.

Conclusion: treat maintenance as a fixed cost, not an emergency

Website maintenance cost is not a mystery figure. It is ten lines you can write down today and slot into the annual budget alongside rent or insurance. RM800 to RM2,000 for a brochure site and RM2,500 to RM6,000 for lead-gen are honest.

What loses owners money is not the maintenance bill. It is paying nothing for two years, then RM3,500 to RM8,000 to rebuild what could have been kept alive far cheaper.

            • Kos Maintenance Website Malaysia: Bil Sebenar Setahun

Bil tahunan website bukan satu benda. Ia himpunan benda kecil yang datang pada bulan berlainan, dan sebab tu ia rasa macam tak wujud sampai semua sampai serentak.

Senarai penuh untuk website WordPress biasa: renewal domain, renewal hosting, sijil SSL, lesen plugin berbayar, lesen tema, storan backup, monitoring keselamatan, monitoring uptime, kerja update WordPress dan plugin, dan content edit sepanjang tahun. Sepuluh baris. Kebanyakan quotation development sebut dua.

Domain paling senang.

              RM300-RM800
              domain dan hosting setahun
              RM89
              domain .MY setahun (Exabytes)
              2-3x
              lonjakan biasa harga renewal hosting

Jadi bila kau banding pakej hosting, jangan tengok harga tahun pertama.

SSL sepatutnya kos kosong.

Backup pula tempat orang paling kerap tipu diri sendiri.

Sebahagiannya tambah fungsi.

              Monitoring uptime setahunRM0 – RM200
              Monitoring keselamatan setahunRM150 – RM1,200
              Bersihkan site kena hackRM1,500 – RM5,000
              Bina semula tanpa backupRM3,500 – RM8,000

Apa jadi kalau kau langsung tak bayar apa-apa

Jawapannya bukan site mati serta-merta. Ia reput ikut turutan yang boleh diramal.

              1. Bulan 1 hingga 6. Tiada apa berlaku. Site jalan macam biasa. Ini bahagian yang menipu.
              2. Bulan 6 hingga 12. Lesen plugin expired. Update berhenti sampai. Beberapa plugin mula konflik dengan versi PHP baru yang hosting naikkan tanpa kau perasan.
              3. Bulan 12 hingga 18. Borang enquiry senyap berhenti hantar email. Kau tak tahu sampai pelanggan telefon tanya kenapa tak dibalas.
              4. Bulan 18 hingga 24. Bot jumpa satu kelemahan lama. Halaman spam disisip, atau site kena redirect. Google tandakan site kau, dan trafik organik jatuh mendadak.

Bil tahunan RM2,500 hingga RM6,000. Site jenis ni biasanya ada ads jalan, jadi setiap jam downtime ada harga.

Kedai online. Payment gateway, shipping, inventory, akaun pelanggan. Bil tahunan RM6,000 hingga RM15,000. Setiap update kena diuji sampai checkout.

Angka setahun.

Baris kos Brochure Lead-gen Kedai online
              Renewal domain RM60-RM150 RM60-RM150 RM60-RM150
              Renewal hosting RM240-RM650 RM600-RM1,500 RM1,200-RM3,600
              SSL RM0 RM0 RM0-RM400
              Lesen plugin dan tema RM0-RM500 RM400-RM1,200 RM800-RM1,500
              Backup offsite RM150-RM300 RM200-RM600 RM400-RM900
              Monitoring uptime dan keselamatan RM0-RM350 RM150-RM800 RM400-RM1,400
              Kerja update dan test RM600-RM1,200 RM1,200-RM3,000 RM2,400-RM4,800
              Content edit RM0-RM400 RM400-RM1,200 RM600-RM2,000
              Jumlah setahun RM800-RM2,000 RM2,500-RM6,000 RM6,000-RM15,000

              Cara guna jadual ni

              • Isi hujung rendah kalau kau update sendiri, hujung tinggi kalau vendor buat.
              • Asingkan peruntukan kecemasan bersamaan sebulan bajet.
              • Semak semula setiap kali kau tambah plugin berbayar.
              • Kalau jumlah kau bawah RM800 setahun, kau belum dapat bil penuh.

Sebelum tandatangan care plan, minta skop hitam putih: berapa jam sebulan, respons emergency berapa lama, backup di mana, siapa pegang akaun. Kalau vendor tak boleh jawab, harga murah tak bermakna. Kami sentuh isu sama dalam artikel website murah RM500.

Soalan lazim tentang kos maintenance website

Sebab harga tahun pertama biasanya harga promo. Tahun kedua kembali ke harga senarai, dan lonjakan dua hingga tiga kali ganda memang biasa. Sebelum sign, tanya support berapa kau bayar tahun kedua.

Kebanyakan hosting sediakan pembaharuan automatik.

Apa jadi kalau saya langsung tak update WordPress?

Kalau vendor kata SEO termasuk, minta dia terangkan apa dia buat.

Kesimpulan: bajet maintenance sebagai kos tetap, bukan kos kecemasan

Kos maintenance website bukan angka misteri.

Jawapan ringkas: Google ukur tiga benda.

Nampak laju. Memang selalu nampak laju.

Website lambat makan enquiry dulu, ranking kemudian

Soalan pertama owner biasanya pasal ranking.

Google sendiri terus terang pasal berat isyarat ni. Dokumentasi page experience dia tulis “there is no single signal” untuk page experience, dan Search “always seeks to show the most relevant content, even if the page experience is sub-par.”

Cara murah nak test.

                2.5s
                sasaran LCP di mobile
                200ms
                sasaran INP, tap ke respons
                0.1
                sasaran CLS, layout beranjak

Interaction to Next Paint jadi Core Web Vital pada 12 Mac 2024, ganti First Input Delay.

Dokumentasi Google sendiri kata “having good lab data does not necessarily mean real-user experiences will also be good.”

                1. Mula dari Search Console. Report Core Web Vitals dia kumpulkan URL, jadi kau nampak sama ada masalahnya satu template atau seluruh site.
                2. Lepas tu PageSpeed Insights, page demi page.

Time to First Byte ialah berapa lama server ambil masa nak hantar bait pertama.

Lokasi server pun sama sebabnya.

Browser download semua sekali.

Resize dulu sebelum upload.

Tiga puluh plugin bukan automatik teruk.

                1. Clone site ke staging. Jangan sekali audit atas site live, dan backup dulu.
                2. Rekod baseline. Run PageSpeed Insights atas tiga page sebenar dan catat nombornya.
                3. Deactivate satu plugin, test balik, activate semula. Satu-satu, supaya kau tahu siapa punya kos.
                4. Padam yang tak guna. Plugin deactivate pun masih perlu update dan masih bawa risiko.

Script pula begitu melainkan kau suruh dia tangguh, dan penyumbang paling teruk selalunya pihak ketiga: chat widget, heatmap recorder, pixel iklan, embed review. Load chat lepas visitor scroll sahaja.

Guna ambang Core Web Vitals, bukan satu angka load time.

Google kata “there is no single signal” untuk page experience, dan Search “always seeks to show the most relevant content, even if the page experience is sub-par.” Kelajuan jarang angkat page lemah atasi page yang kuat.

                  INP sama ke dengan FID?

Tidak. Interaction to Next Paint ganti First Input Delay sebagai Core Web Vital pada 12 Mac 2024, menurut web.dev. FID ukur lambat sebelum browser mula handle tap sahaja. INP ukur keseluruhan masa tunggu sampai skrin bertindak balas, jadi lebih susah nak lulus.

Kenapa skor PageSpeed saya berubah setiap kali test?

Berapa banyak plugin WordPress baru dikira terlalu banyak?

Tiada angka tetap.

Biasanya bukan langkah pertama.

English version here: Website Speed in Malaysia: Core Web Vitals in Plain Language.

Kalau kau nak orang jalankan field data dan bagitahu jujur mana tiga fix yang berbaloi dibayar, hubungi kami.

                • Website Speed in Malaysia: Core Web Vitals in Plain Language

Short answer: Google measures three things. Largest Contentful Paint should land under 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1, judged at the 75th percentile of real visits. For most Malaysian WordPress sites the money is in better hosting near your visitors, lighter images and fewer loaded scripts. A PageSpeed score of 100 is not the target.

A slow website never announces itself to its owner. You open your site from the office, on fibre, on a new phone, with every file already cached. It looks fine. It always has.

Your customer is somewhere else. She is in a Klang shoplot with two bars of 4G on a three year old Android, she tapped your listing from a Google result, and she is watching a white screen. Six seconds in, she taps the next business.

Speed costs you enquiries long before it costs you rankings

Owners ask the ranking question first. That is the smaller half of the answer, and it arrives slowly.

Google’s page experience documentation states that “there is no single signal” for page experience, and that Search “always seeks to show the most relevant content, even if the page experience is sub-par.” A fast page will not lift thin content above a competitor who answered the question. If your pages are not appearing at all, start with the indexing checks.

The enquiry loss is immediate and much bigger. Every second before your page paints is a second someone can leave, and the ones most likely to leave sit on the worst connections: outside a city centre, or inside a mall basement.

Cheap test: compare the enquiry rate of mobile visitors against desktop in GA4. If mobile converts at a third of desktop on the same design, page weight is the first suspect.

                  The short version

                  • Ranking gains from speed are real but small and slow to arrive.
                  • Enquiry losses are immediate and land hardest on mobile.
                  • Mobile converting far below desktop on the same design is your warning light.

The three Core Web Vitals, and what each one feels like

Google publishes exact thresholds for all three on web.dev, judged at the 75th percentile of real page loads. Three of four visits must be good before you pass.

                  2.5s
                  LCP target, mobile
                  200ms
                  INP target, tap to response
                  0.1
                  CLS target, layout movement
Metric What it measures Good Poor How it feels
LCP Time until the biggest visible element paints, usually the hero or headline 2.5s or less Over 4.0s Blank screen, wondering if the link broke
INP Delay between a tap and the screen visibly responding 200ms or less Over 500ms Tapping the menu twice because nothing happened
CLS How much the layout jumps while the page settles 0.1 or less Over 0.25 Tapping the wrong button after a banner loads above it

Check one thing in any report you are handed. Interaction to Next Paint became a Core Web Vital on 12 March 2024, replacing First Input Delay. FID counted only the delay before the browser began handling a tap, which most sites passed. INP counts the whole wait to visible response, so many sites that passed before now fail.

If an agency report you receive in 2026 still lists FID, it came from a stale template.

Field data is the score that counts, and 100 is the wrong target

PageSpeed Insights gives two blocks that look alike and mean different things. The top is field data from the Chrome User Experience Report: real Chrome users on real phones and networks, over a trailing 28 days. That is what Google’s systems see. The bottom is Lighthouse, one simulated run on a simulated device. Google’s own documentation puts it plainly: “having good lab data does not necessarily mean real-user experiences will also be good.”

                  1. Start in Search Console. Its Core Web Vitals report groups URLs, showing whether the problem is one template or the whole site.
                  2. Then PageSpeed Insights, page by page. Test pages that receive traffic, not your favourite one.
                  3. Use Lighthouse for the cause, not the verdict, then wait 28 days before judging the fix.

Which brings up the score in the coloured circle. It is a weighted blend of lab metrics on a throttled device, and it moves eight or ten points between runs with no change to the site. Chasing the last twenty points is where money burns: to buy them, developers strip out live chat, booking calendars and conversion tracking.

A better target is boring: all three vitals green on mobile field data, then stop. Many small Malaysian sites have no field data at all, and then lab diagnostics and your own phone is all you get.

Not sure whether your site is actually slow?We run the field data, the lab report and a real mobile test, then name the fixes worth paying for.

Hosting quality and server location set the ceiling

Time to First Byte is how long the server takes to send the first byte. Google’s web.dev guidance puts a good TTFB at 0.8 seconds or less and a poor one above 1.8 seconds. It is not a Core Web Vital, but it sits under LCP as a floor.

The arithmetic is unforgiving. If your server takes 1.5 seconds to answer, one second is left to download and paint everything before you miss the 2.5 second LCP target. No image compression buys that back, which is why hosting sits at the top of the list.

Location matters for the same reason. A cheap shared plan on a server in Arizona or Frankfurt adds physical round trip time to every request from a KL visitor, charged again on every asset. For a Malaysian audience, Malaysia or Singapore is the default. Ask your host to state the data centre location in writing.

Budget shared hosting sits in the low tens of ringgit a month; a decent cloud or managed WordPress plan runs several times that. What moves the figure is traffic, staging, and who patches the server. If you are still choosing a platform, the builder comparison covers hosting under each option.

Images are almost always the heaviest thing on the page

The most common cause of a slow Malaysian WordPress site is a 4,000 pixel wide camera photo uploaded straight from a phone, then shown in a 400 pixel box. The browser downloads all of it.

Resize before uploading. A full width hero rarely needs more than 1,600 to 2,000 pixels across, an inline image rarely more than 1,200. Then convert. Google’s WebP documentation states that lossy WebP images are 25 to 34 percent smaller than comparable JPEG at equal quality, and lossless WebP is 26 percent smaller than PNG.

                  JPEG, as exportedbaseline
                  WebP lossy, same quality25-34% smaller
                  PNG, as exportedbaseline
                  WebP lossless26% smaller

Two details catch people out. Lazy loading is good below the fold and bad for the hero image, and several popular plugins lazy load everything by default, adding a second to LCP on the one image Google is timing. Every image also needs width and height attributes so the browser reserves space. Missing dimensions are the most common cause of a failing CLS score.

Plugin count is a symptom, and page builder markup is the bill

Thirty plugins is not automatically bad. Twelve badly written ones can be heavier than thirty careful ones. What matters is how much CSS and JavaScript each loads on pages that never use it. The classic case is a booking plugin used on one page, loading its stylesheet and script bundle on all forty.

                  1. Clone the site to staging. Never audit on the live site, and back up first.
                  2. Record a baseline. Run PageSpeed Insights on three real pages and note the numbers.
                  3. Deactivate one plugin, retest, reactivate. One at a time, so you know which one owns which cost.
                  4. Delete what you are not using. Deactivated plugins still need updating and still carry risk.
                  5. Restrict the rest. Most caching plugins can stop a script loading where it is not needed.

Page builders such as Elementor, Divi and WPBakery add their own layer. They generate deeply nested markup and ship a framework of CSS and JavaScript on every page, whether the page uses those widgets or not. That cost is real and survivable. Fix hosting, images and conditional loading first, then decide whether the rest justifies a rebuild.

Render-blocking scripts, fonts, caching and a CDN, in that order

Render-blocking means a file the browser must process before it paints anything. Stylesheets in the head do this by design. Scripts do it unless you tell them not to, and the worst offenders are third party: chat widgets, heatmap recorders, ad pixels, review embeds. Load the chat only after the visitor scrolls.

Fonts are quietly expensive. Two families at four weights each is eight downloads, and until they arrive the browser may show nothing where your text should be. Self-host the files, cut the character set to Latin, and set font-display so a fallback shows at once. Most business sites need two weights of one family.

Page caching is the biggest lever on shared hosting. It turns a page that PHP and MySQL rebuild on every request into a static file the server hands over instantly, which attacks TTFB directly.

A CDN comes last for most readers here. If your server already sits in Malaysia or Singapore and your customers are Malaysian, the gain is modest. It earns its cost on heavy media, or traffic outside the region. For a wider technical pass, work through the technical SEO checklist after the speed work.

The real test is a mid-range Android on 4G, not a laptop on office fibre

This is the part almost every owner skips, and the part that changes minds. Testing on a new iPhone on office wifi tells you how the site performs for nobody in your customer list.

                  1. Borrow a three or four year old Android. It is closer to your median visitor than anything in the meeting room.
                  2. Turn off wifi. Mobile data only, from a spot with average signal rather than a rooftop.
                  3. Clear the cache or use incognito. A cached copy hides the problem you are testing for.
                  4. Walk the whole path. Search result, landing page, service page, then the WhatsApp or form button.

Without a real device, Chrome DevTools gets close for free: set network throttling to slow 4G and CPU throttling to four times slowdown, then reload.

This is also why PageSpeed Insights scores mobile lower than desktop. The mobile test already simulates a mid-tier device on a constrained connection, and that number is the one worth fixing. It matters most on pages carrying your offer, which is why landing page weight deserves its own review.

Which fixes you can do yourself and which need a developer

The dividing line is simple. If a change reverses from the dashboard and you have a working backup, do it yourself. If it touches theme files, functions.php, the server or DNS, get someone who can undo it.

Fix Who Rough effort What it moves
Resize and compress images before upload Owner or staff Ongoing habit LCP
Delete plugins you no longer use Owner, with a backup 1 hour INP, LCP
Install and configure a caching plugin Owner, carefully 1 to 2 hours TTFB, LCP
Set width and height on every image Developer 1 to 3 hours CLS
Defer or conditionally load third party scripts Developer 2 to 4 hours INP, LCP
Self-host and subset fonts Developer 1 to 2 hours LCP, CLS
Move hosting to a server in the region Host migration team Half a day TTFB
Rebuild templates off a heavy page builder Developer Days to weeks All three

Work down that table in order. The first three rows cost little and often move the field data on their own. The bottom row belongs last. If you are pricing it out, what a build package includes is a useful reference.

Frequently asked questions about website speed in Malaysia

What is a good page load time for a Malaysian business website?

Use the Core Web Vitals thresholds rather than one load time figure. Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds on mobile is what Google publishes, at the 75th percentile of real visits. If your content paints inside that window on a mid-range Android over 4G, the page is fast enough.

Does website speed affect Google rankings in Malaysia?

It does, but less than owners expect. Google states that “there is no single signal” for page experience, and that Search “always seeks to show the most relevant content, even if the page experience is sub-par.”

Is INP the same thing as FID?

No. Interaction to Next Paint replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital on 12 March 2024, according to web.dev. FID measured only the delay before the browser began handling a tap. INP measures the full wait to a visible response, so it is harder to pass.

Why is my PageSpeed score different every time I test?

The lab test runs on a simulated device and network, and the result moves several points between runs with no change to the site. That variance is normal. Read the field data block at the top instead, covering real Chrome users over 28 days.

My site shows no field data in PageSpeed Insights. What should I do?

Chrome has not collected enough real visits from that URL, which is common for small Malaysian sites. Fall back to the Lighthouse diagnostics, then test by hand on a mid-range Android over mobile data. Check again next month.

Will a CDN fix my slow website?

Only sometimes. If your server already sits in Malaysia or Singapore and your visitors are local, a CDN delivers less than owners hope. Page caching usually delivers more for less. It earns its keep on heavy media, or traffic outside the region.

How many WordPress plugins are too many?

There is no fixed number. Twelve well-built plugins can be lighter than five careless ones. What matters is how much CSS and JavaScript each loads on pages that never use it. Audit by deactivating one at a time on staging.

Do I need to rebuild my site off Elementor or Divi to make it fast?

Usually not as a first step. Most page builder sites get most of the way with better hosting, lighter images, caching and conditional script loading. A rebuild is worth costing out when the template alone ships hundreds of kilobytes of CSS per page.

Conclusion: fix the floor first, then stop

Speed work has a clear order of payoff here. Hosting and server location set the ceiling, images carry the most removable weight, plugins and builder markup come next, and scripts, fonts and caching clean up the rest. Measure on field data over 28 days, test on a mid-range Android on mobile data, and treat the lab score as a diagnostic only.

                    Ringkasan

                    • FPX milik PayNet, bukan milik mana-mana gateway.

                    4. Letak polisi refund dan delivery. Bank baca page ni sebelum lulus channel kad.
                    5. Mohon FPX dulu, kad kemudian. FPX lulus cepat, kad ambil masa berbulan.

Yuran transaksi enam gateway, dibanding sebelah menyebelah

Dua provider tak terbitkan rate langsung. Kami tulis begitu dan tak teka nombor.

                    Gateway FPX Kad tempatan E-wallet
                    toyyibPay RM1.00 B2C, RM2.00 B2B 1.50%, kad asing 3.5% DuitNow QR 1.00% atau RM1.00
                    Billplz Basic 1.25% B2C, 3.00% B2B 1.8% MYR 1.5%

                    Stripe 3% + RM1.00 3% + RM1.00 GrabPay 3%, Alipay 2.9% + RM1.00

Bila purata order kau kecil, caj peratus lagi menguntungkan.

                    Gateway FPX Kad Lain
Billplz Hari bekerja berikutnya T+2 hari bekerja E-wallet hari berikutnya, Atome Rabu dan Jumaat
toyyibPay 1 hingga 4 hari bekerja 4 hari bekerja DuitNow QR 2 hari bekerja
Stripe 5 hari bekerja 7 hari kalendar Payout pertama 7 hingga 14 hari
senangPay Tidak diterbitkan Tidak diterbitkan Minimum RM100 sebelum cash out

Fiuu pergi arah bertentangan.

Billplz sendiri nyatakan integrasi Shopify mereka tambah 0.3% atas rate biasa.

Susun angka tu. Kedai Shopify Basic guna Billplz atas FPX bayar 1.25% plus 0.3% plus 2% Shopify, jadi hampir 3.6% satu order.

                    Situasi kau Pilihan pertama Kenapa

Satu nasihat terakhir. Bina checkout supaya kau boleh tukar provider tanpa rombak keseluruhan kedai. Sama macam bila kau susun bajet digital marketing tahunan, kos gateway patut disemak semula setiap tahun.

Berapa lama duit masuk akaun bank selepas customer bayar?

Kenapa Stripe mahal berbanding gateway tempatan?

Berapa kos tambahan kalau kedai saya atas Shopify?

• Payment Gateway Malaysia: How to Choose for Your Online Store

Short answer: For a small Malaysian online store, toyyibPay is cheapest on FPX at RM1 per transaction with no monthly fee. Billplz charges 1.25% on its free plan and pays out the next business day. Stripe is easiest to open but costs 3% + RM1, with a 7 calendar day standard payout in Malaysia.

One merchant we worked with compared four gateways on rate alone, picked the cheapest, then spent month two chasing money that had not landed. The rate was fine. The settlement cycle was not.

That is the part most comparison tables skip. Before the percentages, work out whether you qualify to register at all, and how many days your money sits with the provider.

This guide covers the six gateways Malaysian SMEs actually shortlist: iPay88, Billplz, senangPay, toyyibPay, Stripe and Fiuu. Every figure is as of our check in August 2026. Gateway pricing and ownership change often, so confirm before you sign.

What you are buying is access to FPX, not a private network

Most online payments in Malaysia move over FPX. The gateway sits in front of it and takes a cut.

FPX is owned and operated by PayNet. Stripe’s documentation states that Bank Negara Malaysia and 11 other major Malaysian financial institutions are members of the PayNet Group. Picking FPX redirects the customer into their own online banking for a two-step authorisation.

The volume behind that rail is large. PayNet’s press release reports 8.44 billion digital payment transactions processed during 2025. A store that does not offer FPX looks broken to local buyers.

                      The short version

                      • FPX belongs to PayNet, not to any gateway you sign with.
                      • Customers authenticate at their own bank, so FPX carries no chargebacks.
                      • Compare markup, settlement speed and extra channels, not the rail itself.

Who gets approved, and what a sole proprietor needs

This is the first filter, and it removes half the list for new sellers.

The iPay88 application guide published by its reseller Biztory lists sole proprietors, Sdn Bhd, Bhd, LLP and non-profit organisations as accepted business types. For online banking it asks for the form, identification, business registration, three months of bank statements and product information, processed within 14 working days. The card channel also wants premises photos with your signboard, and a live website.

senangPay asks for the SSM certificate, the director’s identity card and the latest bank statement, per its own FAQ, and notes instant approval applies to FPX and e-wallet channels only.

toyyibPay is the most forgiving. The CartDNA merchant guide explains that individual sellers can register with a personal bank account through the Dewan Ekonomi GIG Malaysia incubator structure without SSM, then upgrade later. Stripe you can open yourself, but its documentation states a Business Registration Number is required for FPX charges and payouts.

                      1. Register with SSM first. A sole proprietorship is fine, but the bank account name must match the business name.
                      2. Pull three months of bank statements. iPay88 requires these for the online banking channel.
                      3. Put the website live before applying. The iPay88 guide states a site still under development will not be processed by the bank.
                      4. Publish refund and delivery policies. Banks read these during card channel review, so treat them as part of a properly built business website.
                      5. Apply for FPX first, cards second. FPX clears quickly, card approval can run into months.

Transaction fees across the six gateways

Two providers publish nothing. We say so rather than inventing a number.

The Billplz, toyyibPay, senangPay and Stripe figures come from each provider’s own pricing page. For iPay88, the reseller EasyStore lists an indicative 2.8% to 3.2% band for credit cards and online banking, while stating those rates are subject to change. Airwallex, in its Fiuu review, says Fiuu publishes no transaction fees, setup costs or annual fees.

Percentage pricing wins on small baskets, flat pricing on large ones. Against RM1 flat versus 1.25%, the crossover sits near RM80 per order.

Annual fees get ignored in most comparisons, which is odd, since they keep running through a quiet month.

                      senangPay AdvanceRM349
                      Billplz StandardRM999

Stripe states on its Malaysian pricing page that there are no setup fees and no monthly fees. Billplz Basic is free, and the RM999 a year Standard plan moves FPX B2C from 1.25% to 0.75%. Process RM40,000 of FPX a month and that half point saves roughly RM200 a month, clearing the RM999 easily. At RM5,000 a month the upgrade is a waste.

senangPay sits at RM199 a year for Starter and RM349 for Advance. toyyibPay has no subscription, but its card channel carries RM100 onboarding plus RM100 a year. iPay88 charges a setup fee without publishing the amount.

Settlement timing is what actually hurts a small business

Half a percent on rate is survivable. A six day gap in when your money arrives is not, if you restock weekly.

                      Gateway FPX Cards Other
Billplz Next business day T+2 business days E-wallets next day, Atome Wednesday and Friday

The Stripe figures come from its own payout documentation, which lists Malaysia at 7 calendar days for standard payout speed with a MYR 5 minimum. Its FPX page gives FPX payout timing as 5 business days.

Convert that into working capital. A store turning over RM30,000 a month runs about RM1,000 a day, so the gap between next day settlement and a 7 day cycle leaves roughly RM6,000 permanently parked with the provider. That is a stock order you cannot place.

For non-profits, the toyyibPay Santai plan drops FPX B2C to RM0.00, but settlement runs to 10 business days.

DuitNow QR and e-wallet coverage varies more than the rates do

E-wallets are no longer optional for Malaysian buyers. PayNet reports 681,250 new DuitNow QR acceptance points added during 2025, taking the national total past 3 million.

Billplz groups DuitNow QR, Touch n Go, Boost and GrabPay into one wallet category at 1.5% with next day payout. toyyibPay prices DuitNow QR at 1.00% or RM1.00. senangPay puts e-wallets at RM0.65 or 1.5%, whichever is higher, and adds BNPL with SPayLater at 2.0%, PayLater by Grab at 6.0% and Atome at 5.5%.

Stripe is the weak point here. Its payment method support tables show Malaysian accounts can take cards, FPX, GrabPay and Alipay. Touch n Go, Boost, ShopeePay and DuitNow QR do not appear for Malaysian merchants, which is a real gap for a store selling everyday goods locally.

Fiuu goes the other way. The Airwallex review notes more than 110 payment methods, including cash payment at over 2,000 7-Eleven outlets, a channel none of the others carry.

Recurring billing does not work on FPX

If you sell a monthly plan, this matters more than the rate table.

Stripe’s FPX documentation states plainly that FPX does not support recurring payments and cannot be saved for future charges. Your customer would log into online banking and authorise every month, which is a churn machine.

That leaves three routes. Cards are the obvious one, and Stripe runs card subscriptions with no extra monthly charge, which is why much Malaysian SaaS sits there despite the 3% + RM1.

The second is auto deduct or direct debit built on a bank mandate. Billplz lists auto deduct at 2.3% + RM1.25 on Basic and 2% + RM0.75 on Standard, and toyyibPay offers direct debit.

The third is senangPay recurring, which its pricing page limits to Advance and Enterprise. Buy the RM199 Starter because it looked cheap and you will not have this feature.

Refunds and chargebacks sit on opposite sides of the ledger

FPX has one advantage nobody advertises. Because the customer authorises inside their own banking session, Stripe’s documentation calls the fraud risk low and says FPX payments do not turn into chargebacks that pull funds from your balance.

Cards are the reverse. Full chargeback rights apply, a customer can dispute months later, and you prove delivery. For high ticket items that is a real exposure that never shows up in a rate comparison.

Refunds flip the advantage. An FPX payment can be refunded up to 60 days after the original charge, but the refund is asynchronous and normally takes up to 14 days, sometimes six weeks. Write a standard reply for your support inbox now.

senangPay states in its FAQ that card and e-wallet refunds take up to 14 working days, and that e-wallet refunds must be initiated on the same day as the transaction. Build that rule into your returns process if you use them.

Platform integration, and the Shopify surcharge nobody budgets for

A gateway with no plugin for your platform becomes custom development work, and that has a price. Pick platform and gateway together. If you are still weighing that decision, our comparison of WooCommerce and Shopify for Malaysian stores covers the trade-offs.

On WooCommerce, all six have an official or mature community plugin, which is why it remains the safe pick for FPX-heavy Malaysian stores.

Shopify has a specific problem. Shopify Payments is not available in Malaysia, so you use a third party gateway and Shopify adds its own transaction fee. Per Airwallex’s Shopify Malaysia guide, that fee is 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. Billplz states its Shopify integration adds 0.3% to standard rates.

Stack those. A Shopify Basic store on Billplz over FPX pays 1.25% plus 0.3% plus 2%, landing near 3.6% per order. Once volume is steady, upgrading the Shopify plan or moving to WooCommerce usually beats switching gateway, and we cover the timeline in our guide to how long a business website takes to build.

FPX-heavy store above RM40,000 a month Billplz Standard 0.75% FPX pays back the RM999 a year quickly
Need cards and FPX in one place, mid-sized orders senangPay Starter RM199 a year, cards at RM0.65 or 2.5%
Selling overseas or on a subscription model Stripe Card subscriptions, no fixed fees, even with the 7 day payout
High volume, many channels, technical team in place iPay88 or Fiuu Widest channel coverage, but you negotiate the rate yourself

One last thing. Build the checkout so you can swap providers without rebuilding the store. Much like your digital marketing budget, gateway costs deserve a fresh look every year.

Frequently asked questions about Malaysian payment gateways

Which payment gateway is cheapest for a small Malaysian online store?

On FPX, toyyibPay at RM1 per B2C transaction is cheapest once your average order clears roughly RM80. Below that, Billplz Basic at 1.25% costs less. Neither charges a monthly fee, so open both and compare against your own order data.

Can a sole proprietor get a payment gateway in Malaysia?

Yes. The iPay88 application guide lists sole proprietors among accepted business types, and Billplz and senangPay onboard SSM-registered businesses. With no SSM registration at all, toyyibPay allows individual sellers to register through an incubator structure and upgrade later.

How long before the money reaches my bank account?

It depends on the gateway. Billplz settles FPX the next business day and cards at T+2. toyyibPay takes 1 to 4 business days on FPX. Stripe lists Malaysia at 7 calendar days for standard payout. iPay88, Fiuu and senangPay publish no schedule.

Why is Stripe more expensive than local Malaysian gateways?

Stripe charges 3% + RM1.00 on local cards and FPX in Malaysia, against 1.25% or RM1 flat locally. You are paying for self-serve account opening, multi-currency support and mature subscription tooling. For a store selling only in Ringgit, that is an expensive premium.

Can I run monthly subscriptions on FPX?

Not automatically. Stripe’s documentation states FPX does not support recurring payments and cannot be saved for future charges. For repeat collection you need cards, Billplz auto deduct, or toyyibPay direct debit. senangPay limits recurring billing to Advance and Enterprise.

Do FPX transactions carry chargeback risk?

No. Because the customer authorises inside their own online banking, Stripe’s documentation says FPX payments do not become chargebacks that withdraw funds from your balance. Refunds are still possible for up to 60 days, but the process is asynchronous and normally takes up to 14 days.

Is iPay88 still a Malaysian company?

iPay88 operates from Malaysia but is owned by Japanese group NTT DATA, which announced the acquisition in 2015 according to NTT DATA’s own release and reporting by The Star. Razer Merchant Services was rebranded Fiuu in March 2024, and senangPay was bought by Indonesia’s DOKU in 2022.

What extra does it cost if my store runs on Shopify?

Shopify Payments is not available in Malaysia, so you use a third party gateway and Shopify adds its own fee. The Airwallex guide lists 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. Billplz adds a further 0.3% for Shopify.

Should I run more than one payment gateway?

Above roughly RM20,000 a month, yes. Run one for FPX with fast settlement and a second for cards and overseas customers. It adds reconciliation work, but protects you when a channel goes down or an account is pulled for review.

Conclusion: choose on settlement and eligibility, not on rate alone

For most small Malaysian stores the answer in year one is toyyibPay or Billplz Basic, because neither carries a fixed cost and both return your money within a few business days. Move to Billplz Standard once FPX volume passes RM40,000 a month. Take Stripe if you sell subscriptions or sell abroad, and accept the 7 day payout. Keep iPay88 and Fiuu for when you can negotiate.
