TikTok Shop Malaysia: Is It Worth It for Your SME? (2026)

Website & Ecommerce Lesgo Media · 2026

  • 4.86%-18.9%commission range by category
  • 3.78%transaction fee
  • RM0.54support fee per order
Short answer: TikTok Shop is worth it if your product can be demonstrated on camera and you commit someone to daily content. Platform fees land near 14.6% on a typical order: commission of 4.86% to 18.9% by category, a 3.78% transaction fee, and RM0.54 per delivered order. Add affiliate commission and the deduction can reach a third of your price.

A Penang skincare brand went from zero to five figures a month on TikTok Shop in one quarter. A homeware seller in Klang opened a shop the same month, uploaded eighty products, and has sold nine units since. Only one had a content team.

Separate two things that get confused constantly. TikTok Ads is paid media: you buy placement and the money leaves whether or not anyone buys, which we covered in our piece on whether TikTok Ads is worth the investment. TikTok Shop is a marketplace inside the app, with its own checkout and commission. You can run either without the other.

This article answers what remains after every deduction, and how to run the channel without handing your business to one app.

Where TikTok Shop sits next to TikTok Ads

TikTok Ads is an auction. You pay to put a video in front of an audience you choose, and the spend leaves your ad account regardless of the result.

TikTok Shop takes the opposite shape. No upfront cost. You list products, buyers check out inside the app, and TikTok takes a cut of every completed sale. If nothing sells, you pay nothing.

That flips where the risk sits. With ads you can burn RM3,000 and see no revenue. With Shop you never lose money you have not made, but every ringgit arrives already reduced, for as long as you sell there.

Most sellers who scale run both, using ads to push videos that already convert. On a tight budget, Shop alone is the safer start because cost only appears alongside revenue.

Discovery-led selling, and why it changes the work

Shopee and your own website both capture demand that already exists. Someone decides they want a product, types it into a search box, and you win by appearing with a sensible price and enough reviews.

TikTok Shop works from the other end. Most sales start in the feed, not in search. Someone watching for entertainment sees a product used, and only then decides they want it. Demand is created rather than captured.

That changes where your effort goes. On Shopee the work is listings, pricing, reviews and search ads. On TikTok Shop it is producing videos people watch to the end. A beautiful product page will not rescue weak content.

It also explains the volatility. One video lands and a single day outsells a normal month. The next week goes quiet. Search traffic builds slower but holds steadier, which is the argument for running both. If you are choosing a store platform, our WooCommerce and Shopify comparison covers the trade-offs.

What TikTok Shop charges in 2026

These figures come from TikTok Shop Malaysia’s own Seller University, so no guessing is needed. Commission rates effective 13 September 2025 split by shop type and by whether you are in the BXP programme, and every rate below includes SST.

Shop type Commission range (SST inclusive)
Marketplace, BXP seller 4.86% to 11.34%
Marketplace, non-BXP 9.18% to 15.66%
Mall, BXP seller 8.10% to 14.58%
Mall, non-BXP 12.42% to 18.90%

On top sits a transaction fee of 3.78% including SST, applied to the subtotal after your own discounts. From 15 February 2026, TikTok Shop also charges a platform support fee of RM0.50 before tax, or RM0.54 with 8% SST, on every delivered order. It is not refunded if the order is later returned.

TikTok Shop’s official notice lists exemptions. Small sellers with 1 to 100 net orders in 30 days, or 101 to 200 orders under RM3,000 GMV, get a rolling monthly waiver. Bakery, fresh and frozen goods, groceries and textbooks are exempt. Rates like these change, so check Seller Centre before fixing a price.

The margin left on a RM100 order

The honest way to feel the fees is to run one order through. Take a product you sell at RM100, costing RM40 to buy, sitting mid-range on marketplace commission at 10.26%.

Platform deductions come to RM10.26 commission, RM3.78 transaction fee and RM0.54 support fee. That is RM14.58, close to 14.6% of the price. Subtract RM40 of goods and roughly RM3 of packing and shipping, and about RM42 is left before you pay anyone to make content.

Now add an affiliate. Offer creators 20% and another RM20 leaves, dropping you to around RM22. That is before samples sent to creators who sold nothing.

Malaysian payment gateway rates usually sit around 2% to 3% depending on provider and card type, so confirm with yours. Either way, products under roughly 50% gross margin rarely survive TikTok Shop once affiliates are switched on.

Which categories move and which stall

The format suits some products far better than others. The test: can a stranger understand why they need this within five seconds of watching, with no explanation?

Usually works Usually struggles
Skincare and cosmetics with a visible result B2B services and anything needing a quotation
Fashion, tudung, accessories High-ticket items with a long consideration cycle
Small gadgets and home tools that fix an annoyance Products whose benefit only lands once read about
Snacks, coffee, packaged food Bulky or heavy goods with high delivery cost
Baby and pet essentials Regulated goods such as certain medicines

Price matters as well. Items under RM50 move fastest, though the RM0.54 per order takes a bigger percentage bite at low prices. Items above RM300 do sell, but they need LIVE and stronger social proof.

If your product sits in the right column, TikTok still has a role. It just belongs as an awareness channel feeding your own site. Our comparison of Instagram, TikTok and Facebook sets out where each earns its place.

The content volume the algorithm expects

This is the cost that appears on no rate card, and it is what kills most SME shops.

The feed does not promote shops. It promotes videos, and each has a short life. When a video stops circulating, the sales it produced stop too. Active sellers publish several videos a day, not several a week.

Most SMEs assume an intern can absorb this. In practice one person shooting, editing and answering comments produces maybe two to four usable videos a day before quality drops. Add LIVE and that is a second role.

So the real decision is whether you will put at least one full-time person on content, or pay an outside team. If the answer is no, wait. Our content calendar guide is where to start planning output.

LIVE selling, the engine most sellers leave cold

Short videos bring people in. LIVE closes them. Plenty of Malaysian sellers open a shop, upload products, post a handful of clips and wonder why conversion is poor. Usually they have never streamed consistently.

LIVE settles what a 30 second clip cannot. A buyer asks about sizing, asks to see the real colour under normal light, and gets an answer in ten seconds. The hesitation that normally closes the app is resolved on the spot.

Frequency beats duration. One two-hour session a month builds nothing. Three one-hour sessions a week at fixed times works better, because viewers learn when to show up and the algorithm learns who to show.

The cost is people and hours, not equipment. A phone, a ring light and a tidy backdrop are enough. The expensive part is a host who can talk for an hour while holding prices, stock and discount codes in their head. If nobody can do that, hire first.

Affiliate creators, and what that commission really costs

The second underused engine is the affiliate programme. You set a rate, creators make their own videos with your product, and you pay only on sales. It looks free. It is not.

You set the affiliate rate, not TikTok, and it stacks on platform fees rather than replacing them. Rates in competitive Malaysian categories commonly fall around 10% to 20%. Analysis by Malaysian seller tools firm Inseller shows that at 20%, net profit on one order can shrink to a few ringgit once every other deduction is counted.

Two questions decide whether it earns its cost. Are those sales genuinely incremental, or is a creator taking credit for buyers who would have purchased anyway. And how many samples do you ship per creator who actually sells.

Start moderate, watch which creators produce repeat orders, then raise commission for those few through targeted campaigns. Opening a high rate to everyone spends your margin with nothing to show. Our guide on measuring social media ROI applies directly here.

Fulfilment, delivery standards and returns

New sellers underestimate this part. TikTok Shop holds sellers to tight despatch windows, and repeated lateness damages your shop health score, which suppresses how far your videos travel.

That means real stock and a packing process you can repeat under pressure. A pre-order model that works on Instagram will hurt you here. If one LIVE produces three hundred orders in an hour, your operation has to hold that night.

Returns run higher than on your own store. Purchases here are often impulsive, and a share of buyers regret them by morning. Budget for a return rate above your website’s and price accordingly.

Remember the RM0.54 support fee is not refunded when an order comes back. On thin-margin products, small charges accumulate into a real number by month end.

Platform dependency, and how to keep TikTok Shop beside your own store

Owners skip this part until it becomes a problem. When your whole business lives inside one app, the buyer list belongs to the platform, not to you.

Rules also change without a vote. The platform support fee did not exist before February 2026. TikTok Shop is separately running a seller verification round with a 28 February 2026 deadline, and per notices reported by seller tool providers such as BigSeller, unverified accounts can have withdrawals frozen after 90 days and stop receiving orders after 180 days. Baseline requirements matter too: individual sellers must be Malaysian citizens aged 18 or over with a matching bank account, corporate sellers need valid Malaysian business registration, and one verified entity may register at most five shops.

The short version

  • Use TikTok Shop to find new customers, not to keep them.
  • Your own site stays the place for full pricing, bundles and repeat orders.
  • Collect phone numbers and emails through inserts and follow-up offers.
  • Never let one platform carry more than half your monthly sales.
  1. Launch with three to five proven SKUs. Do not upload the whole catalogue. Find what moves first.
  2. Lock the content schedule before launch. At least two videos a day and two LIVE sessions a week for the first six weeks.
  3. Set TikTok-specific pricing. Rebuild the margin with full deductions, not website prices.
  4. Turn on affiliates only after you have data. Know which video styles convert before inviting creators.
  5. Route repeat buyers to your site. A discount card in the parcel means the second order arrives without commission.

Frequently asked questions about TikTok Shop Malaysia

How much commission does TikTok Shop Malaysia charge?

Per TikTok Shop Malaysia’s Seller University, commission effective 13 September 2025 starts at 4.86% for Marketplace sellers in the BXP programme and rises to 18.90% for non-BXP Mall sellers, all SST inclusive. Your exact rate depends on category, so check the rate card in Seller Centre because these rates change.

What is the RM0.54 platform support fee?

A flat charge of RM0.50 before tax, or RM0.54 including 8% SST, on every successfully delivered order from 15 February 2026. It is not refunded if the order is returned. Small sellers and essential categories such as bakery and groceries are exempt under TikTok Shop’s conditions.

Is TikTok Shop better than Shopee for a Malaysian SME?

It is different rather than better. Shopee captures people already searching for your product, while TikTok Shop creates demand through video in the feed. If your product is understood within five seconds of watching, TikTok Shop moves faster. If buyers compare prices first, Shopee is steadier.

Do I need SSM registration to open a TikTok Shop?

Individual sellers can register with a MyKad if they are Malaysian citizens aged 18 or over with a bank account in the same name. Corporate sellers need valid Malaysian business registration that stays current while they trade. TikTok Shop is also running seller verification with a 28 February 2026 deadline.

How many videos a day do I actually need to post?

Active Malaysian sellers publish two to four videos a day, not two to four a week. Each video has a short life and the sales it drives end with it. If your team can only manage a few a week, expect uneven sales.

What affiliate commission rate should I offer creators?

You set the rate, not TikTok, and it commonly lands around 10% to 20% in competitive Malaysian categories. It stacks on platform fees, so 20% on a RM100 product leaves very little. Start low, find the creators who genuinely sell, then raise commission for those few.

Can I run a TikTok Shop without doing LIVE sessions?

You can, but you are leaving the strongest engine switched off. LIVE resolves doubts about size, colour and quality in real time, and that is what lifts conversion. If you cannot commit now, schedule one session a week at a fixed time.

Should I close my website if TikTok Shop sells well?

No. Your website is where you own the customer relationship, full pricing and purchase data. TikTok Shop is good for finding new buyers, but rules and fees change with little warning. Use it for acquisition and route repeat buyers to your own store.

Conclusion: when TikTok Shop is worth it for a Malaysian SME

TikTok Shop earns its place when your product can be shown, your gross margin sits above 50%, and one person genuinely owns content output. Miss any of those and the shop becomes a quiet listing that eats admin time.

Treat it as an acquisition channel, not a replacement for your own store. Roughly 14.6% in platform fees before affiliates is the entry price to a market that creates demand, and it is fair as long as you bring those buyers home for the second order.
