  • Keyword Research in Malaysia: When Customers Search in Two Languages

Short answer: Malaysians rarely search in one clean language. They mix Malay and English inside a single query, and they keep technical nouns in English even in a Malay sentence. So keyword research here means collecting the real phrasing from Google autocomplete, People Also Ask and your own Search Console data, then deciding per topic whether it earns a Malay page, an English page, or both. Search Console keeps 16 months of that query history free.

Most keyword lists for Malaysian businesses are built the same wrong way. Someone brainstorms in English, runs the list through a tool, then hands the Malay version to a translator.

The translated list looks tidy. It also contains phrases no Malaysian has ever typed. “Perkhidmatan pemasaran digital” is correct Malay and close to dead as a query, because the people looking for it type “digital marketing agency” or “agency marketing murah”.

This article covers how bilingual search behaves here, how to harvest the real phrasing free, and how to decide which language a page belongs in.

How Malaysians actually type a search query

Watch anyone here use Google on their phone and three patterns appear that a monolingual keyword list cannot capture.

The first is code-switching inside one query. “Kos aircond service”, “harga smartphone terbaik”, “cara claim insurance kereta”. Malay grammar, English nouns, and the query is neither a Malay keyword nor an English one. Tools that sort keywords by language file these badly or miss them.

The second is that technical vocabulary stays in English no matter how Malay the sentence is. Nobody types “pengoptimuman enjin carian”. They type SEO. Same for booking, delivery, warranty, quotation and refund. If your Malay page uses the formal translation and the searcher uses the English word, the page will not match.

The third is that query language follows the size of the decision. Local and casual searches lean Malay, high-value comparison research leans English. A restaurant owner might search “kedai printer murah shah alam” and, an hour later, “commercial printer supplier malaysia” for the same purchase.

    The short version

    • The common Malaysian query shape is Malay grammar with English nouns.
    • Technical terms almost never get translated by real searchers.
    • Language shifts with intent, so one buyer produces queries in both.

Why translating an English keyword list into Malay produces dead keywords

Translation optimises for correctness. Search optimises for what people type, and those two things separate fast in Malaysia.

Take “air conditioner service cost”. A translator returns “kos perkhidmatan penyaman udara”. Proper Malay, and formal register, the kind used in a government circular rather than in a phone search at 11pm when the unit stops blowing cold. The real query is “kos service aircond”.

The gap is register, not vocabulary. Written Malay here has a formal layer for official documents and a spoken layer for everything else. Queries come from the spoken layer, English loan words already baked in, and a translator hands you the formal layer every time.

Translation is also one to one, and the mapping between languages is not. One English keyword can split into three Malay phrasings with different intent, and three English keywords can collapse into one Malay phrase. You see that in the results, never in a spreadsheet.

English keyword Translated Malay (usually dead) What people actually type
air conditioner service cost kos perkhidmatan penyaman udara kos service aircond, harga servis aircond
digital marketing agency agensi pemasaran digital digital marketing agency, agency marketing

Harvesting the real phrasing from autocomplete and People Also Ask

Autocomplete is built from what people actually searched, so Google gives you the real phrasing free. Be systematic instead of typing two or three guesses.

    1. Set search settings to Malaysia. Autocomplete is location sensitive, so suggestions from a Singapore VPN are the wrong data.
    2. Seed in the mixed form. Type “kos service aircond” and read every suggestion before pressing enter.
    3. Run the alphabet. Add a space then each letter from a to z. 26 passes surface long-tail variants the first list never shows.
    4. Prefix with question words. Try “macam mana”, “berapa”, “kenapa”, “bila”, then the English equivalents. Question phrasing holds most of the informational traffic.
    5. Read People Also Ask. Each expansion loads more. Record the questions word for word, mixed-language ones included.
    6. Take the bottom of the page. Related searches are a second harvest, usually more commercial than autocomplete.

Do this once in Malay-leaning phrasing and once in English. The two lists overlap less than you expect, and the overlap tells you which topics need only one page.

Record queries exactly as Google shows them, spelling quirks included. “Aircond”, “air cond” and “aircon” are three different strings, and the one Google suggests is the one your customers use.

Your Search Console query data beats any third-party estimate

Every tool that sells search volume is modelling it. Search Console reports what actually happened on your own site, and Google keeps 16 months of that history.

Open Performance, switch to Queries, set the range to the full 16 months, export, then sort by impressions rather than clicks. High impressions with almost no clicks means Google already shows you for a phrase you never targeted, usually on page two.

That export is the best bilingual keyword source a Malaysian business owns, because it holds the mixed-language queries no tool categorises properly. Filter the query column for Malay markers such as “kos”, “harga”, “cara”, “murah” and “berdekatan”. Most owners find Malay queries they never wrote a word for.

The caveat is honest. Little traffic means little data, so this method starts weak and gets stronger. Give a new site three to six months of publishing before mining the query list. If Search Console is not connected at all, that is the first item on any technical SEO checklist worth following.

Deciding whether a topic needs a Malay page, an English page, or both

Not every topic deserves two pages. Publishing both by default doubles cost and creates internal competition for no gain.

Use three tests, in order. First, search the topic in each language from a Malaysian IP and look at what ranks. A Malay query returning ten English pages means Google cannot find good Malay content, which is an opening.

Second, check whether the two queries return the same URLs. The same set means one intent, so one page serves both. Different URLs means two intents and two pages.

Third, ask who signs the cheque. Consumer services, home repair, food and tuition skew Malay. Software, B2B services and anything with a procurement process skew English.

Signal Write Malay Write English Write both
Search results in that language Mostly Malay pages Mostly English pages Mixed results per language
Buyer type Consumer, local, price-led B2B, technical, comparison Both segments buy

Keeping your Malay and English pages from competing

Two pages on one topic cannibalise each other if you let them. Make them genuinely different documents, not mirrors.

Give each version its own primary keyword and its own slug in its own language. A Malay page at /kos-service-aircond/ and an English page at /aircond-service-cost/ send a clear signal. Near-identical slugs do not.

A live example from a Selangor conveyancing firm: the English guide to the title transfer process sits alongside a separate Malay guide on the same subject. Different primary keyword, different slug, different opening, and the two are joined by an hreflang pair rather than by repeated cross-links.

Write them separately rather than translating. Different opening, different examples, different order of arguments, same facts and same prices. If the second version reads like the first run through a translator, Google has to choose between two versions of one page, and it will suppress one.

Link them to each other once in the conclusion. Everything else stays within language: Malay pages link to Malay pages, English to English. The same discipline applies to your on-page work, where titles and headings carry the language of the page and nothing else.

If both versions exist and one has clearly won, do not delete the loser. Rewrite it around a narrower keyword, or merge it and redirect.

Keyword difficulty and why a new domain should start long-tail

Difficulty scores estimate how hard ranking will be, built mostly from the backlinks of pages already there. Every tool calculates it differently, so read the number as a band, not a measurement.

For a new Malaysian domain with no link history, ignore anything competitive for the first six to twelve months and target queries of four or more words. “SEO” is unwinnable. “Kos SEO untuk kedai online” is rankable with a good article and patience.

You can judge difficulty without a paid tool. Search the query and look at who holds page one. Ten national brands and directories means leave it. Two or three small business pages and a forum thread means there is room.

1-2 word head termsSkip for now
    3 word termsLater
    4-5 word long-tailStart here
    Question phrasesEasiest wins

Malay long-tail queries are usually the softest targets, because most competitors publish in English only. Low volume each, but there are many, and they convert better because the intent is specific. If this is new to you, start with the basics of how ranking works.

Mapping keywords to pages so one intent gets one page

Keyword research fails at mapping more often than at collection. People end up with 300 keywords and no plan, build a page per keyword, and create twelve pages competing for one intent.

    1. Group by intent, not wording. “Kos service aircond”, “harga servis aircond” and “aircond service price” are one intent in two languages, so at most two pages.
    2. Name the page before writing. One URL, one primary keyword, one language, written into a sheet before anyone drafts.
    3. Assign secondaries to it. Everything in the group that shares intent goes into headings and body copy of the same page.
    4. Check for an existing page. If something already ranks for anything in the group, improve it instead of publishing a competitor.
    5. Mark the gaps. Groups with no page in that language are the publishing queue, ordered by how close the buyer is to paying.

Sanity check: if two pages would answer the same question with the same first paragraph, they are one page. Merge before publishing, because merging later costs rankings while the redirect settles.

Free tools that do the job without a Semrush budget

Paid tools are convenient, and their Malaysian volume data is thin enough that no strategy should rest on it. Mixed-language local queries are where sampled estimates fail hardest, so an RM0 tool budget costs you little.

Tool Cost What it is good for Limit
Google Search Console Free Your real queries, 16 months, both languages Only queries you appear for
Google autocomplete Free Real phrasing, spelling variants, long-tail No volume figures
People Also Ask Free Question phrasing, FAQ material Changes between searches
Google Trends Free Comparing two phrasings Relative, not absolute
Keyword Planner Free with a Google Ads account Rough demand bands, related terms Shows wide ranges without active spend

Google Trends earns its place here. It gives no volume, but comparing “servis aircond” against “aircond service” filtered to Malaysia tells you which phrasing wins, the exact question a translated list cannot answer.

A worked example: aircond servicing in Puchong

Collect. Seeds are “service aircond” and “aircond service”. The alphabet run returns “kos service aircond”, “servis aircond rumah”, “aircond service near me”, “harga cuci aircond” and “aircond service puchong”. People Also Ask adds “berapa kerap kena service aircond” and “how much is aircond chemical wash”.

Group. Four intents: price, maintenance frequency, local hiring, and chemical wash as a specific job.

Decide language. Searched from a Malaysian IP, price and frequency return mostly Malay content, local hiring returns mixed results, chemical wash returns English. Price and frequency get Malay pages, local hiring gets both, chemical wash gets English.

Map. Five pages, not nine. A Malay price page, a Malay maintenance guide, a Malay and an English Puchong service page, and an English chemical wash page. The Puchong pages need local SEO work behind them, because they compete in the map pack too.

Check. Six months on, Search Console shows the Malay price page collecting impressions for “harga cuci aircond”, a phrase nobody optimised for. That becomes the next page, or a section on the existing one.

Frequently asked questions about bilingual keyword research

Should I write my whole site in Malay or English?

Neither as a blanket rule. Decide per topic, using the results for that topic from a Malaysian IP. Most Malaysian SME sites end up with an English core for services and Malay pages for price, how-to and local queries, where Malay demand concentrates.

Can I use Google Translate to create my Malay pages?

For keywords, no. Translation returns formal register that nobody searches, and for body copy it reads as imported, which hurts time on page. Write the Malay version natively, keeping English technical nouns as Malaysians say them.

Do I need hreflang tags for Malay and English pages?

Only if the two pages are genuine equivalents. If you wrote them as separate articles for separate keywords, they are different pages rather than language alternates, and normal internal linking is enough.

How many keywords should one page target?

One primary keyword, plus as many secondary phrasings as share that intent, often five to fifteen. The test is whether one page answers all of them well. If it cannot, you have two intents and need a second page.

Is Search Console data reliable for a small site?

Accurate but thin. Every query it lists really happened, so nothing is estimated, but a site with few visitors has few rows. Give a new site three to six months of publishing before mining the export.

Why does Keyword Planner show ranges instead of numbers?

Google limits volume detail for accounts without meaningful ad spend, so you see broad bands instead of figures. The bands still sort keywords into rough tiers. Treat them as ordering, not a traffic forecast.

Should the URL slug be in Malay or English?

Match the language of the page and put the primary keyword in it. A Malay article at /kos-service-aircond/ and an English one at /aircond-service-cost/ stay clearly separate. Mixing languages in one slug helps neither version.

What if my Malay and English pages both rank for the same query?

Check whether they are actually different documents. If one is a translation of the other, rewrite the weaker one around a narrower keyword, or merge and redirect. Two pages answering one question identically will split each other’s signals.

Conclusion: keyword research in a two-language market

Keyword research in Malaysia is a listening job before an analysis job. Collect the phrasing people actually use, from autocomplete, People Also Ask and the 16 months of query data in your own Search Console. Decide language per topic by looking at what already ranks. Give each intent one page in one language, and start with four-word long-tail queries while the domain is young.

    • Keyword Research Malaysia: Bila Customer Search Dalam Dua Bahasa

Search Console simpan 16 bulan data query tu percuma.

Senarai terjemahan tu nampak kemas.

Kedua, istilah teknikal kekal English walau macam mana BM pun ayat tu.

Ketiga, bahasa query ikut saiz keputusan.

      • Bahasa berubah ikut intent, jadi satu pembeli hasilkan query dua bahasa.

Kenapa terjemah senarai keyword English jadi BM hasilkan keyword mati

Terjemahan kejar ketepatan.

Ambil “air conditioner service cost”.

Keyword English Terjemahan BM (selalunya mati) Apa orang taip sebenarnya
air conditioner service cost kos perkhidmatan penyaman udara kos service aircond, harga servis aircond
digital marketing agency agensi pemasaran digital digital marketing agency, agency marketing
dental scaling price harga penskalaan pergigian harga scaling gigi, kos cuci gigi

Kutip ayat sebenar guna autocomplete dan People Also Ask

      2. Mula dengan seed bentuk campur. Taip “kos service aircond” dan baca semua cadangan sebelum tekan enter.
      3. Jalan satu abjad. Tambah space lepas tu huruf a sampai z. 26 pusingan keluarkan variasi long-tail yang senarai pertama tak tunjuk.
      4. Letak kata tanya di depan. Cuba “macam mana”, “berapa”, “kenapa”, “bila”, lepas tu versi English. Ayat soalan pegang paling banyak traffic informational.
      5. Baca People Also Ask. Setiap kali buka satu kotak, dia muat lagi. Rekod soalan tu bulat-bulat, termasuk yang campur bahasa.
      6. Ambil bahagian bawah page.

Rekod query persis macam Google tunjuk, termasuk ejaan pelik.

Data query Search Console kalahkan mana-mana anggaran tool

Caveatnya jujur.

Bukan semua topik layak dua page.

Guna tiga ujian, ikut turutan.

Isyarat Tulis BM Tulis English Tulis dua-dua
Hasil carian bahasa tu Majoriti page BM Majoriti page English Campur ikut bahasa
Jenis pembeli Pengguna, lokal, kejar harga B2B, teknikal, banding Dua-dua segmen beli

Keyword utama lain, slug lain, pembukaan lain, dan dua-dua disambung melalui hreflang, bukan melalui cross-link berulang.

Tulis berasingan, jangan terjemah.

Keyword difficulty dan kenapa domain baru kena mula long-tail

      Head term 1-2 perkataanTinggalkan dulu
      Term 3 perkataanKemudian
      Long-tail 4-5 perkataanMula di sini
      Ayat soalanPaling senang

Query long-tail BM biasanya sasaran paling lembut, sebab kebanyakan pesaing publish English sahaja.

Keyword research selalu gagal di peringkat pemetaan, bukan di peringkat kutipan.

Cantum sebelum publish, sebab cantum lepas publish makan ranking masa redirect duduk.

Tool percuma yang cukup tanpa bajet Semrush

Tool berbayar memang senang, cuma data volume Malaysia dia nipis sampai tiada strategi patut bersandar atasnya. Query lokal campur bahasa adalah tempat anggaran sampel paling teruk gagal, jadi bajet tool RM0 tak rugi banyak.

      Tool Kos Bagus untuk Had
Google Search Console Percuma Query sebenar kau, 16 bulan, dua bahasa Query yang kau muncul sahaja
Google autocomplete Percuma Ayat sebenar, variasi ejaan, long-tail Tiada angka volume
People Also Ask Percuma Ayat soalan, bahan FAQ Berubah tiap kali search
Google Trends Percuma Banding dua ayat Relatif, bukan mutlak
Keyword Planner Percuma dengan akaun Google Ads Band demand kasar, term berkaitan Tunjuk julat luas tanpa spend aktif

Kutip. Seed adalah “klinik gigi” dan “dental clinic”. Pusingan abjad pulangkan “klinik gigi kajang”, “harga scaling gigi”, “kos cabut gigi bongsu”, “dentist near me”, “klinik gigi murah berdekatan”. People Also Ask tambah “berapa kerap kena scaling gigi” dan “how much does braces cost in malaysia”.

Kumpul.

Soalan lazim pasal keyword research dua bahasa

Site saya patut BM semua atau English semua?

Dua-dua bukan jawapan tetap.

Hanya kalau dua page tu betul-betul setara. Kalau kau tulis dia sebagai dua artikel berasingan untuk dua keyword berasingan, dia page berbeza, bukan versi bahasa, dan internal link biasa dah memadai.

Berapa banyak keyword satu page patut target?

Kenapa Keyword Planner tunjuk julat bukan angka?

Google hadkan butiran volume untuk akaun yang tiada spend iklan bermakna, jadi kau nampak band luas ganti angka. Band tu masih boleh susun keyword ikut tingkat kasar. Anggap dia susunan, bukan ramalan traffic.

      • SEO Agency in Petaling Jaya: How to Choose and What It Costs

Short answer: An SEO agency in Petaling Jaya earns its fee on low-volume, high-intent keywords and a correctly built local pack, not on national head terms. Expect RM1,000 to RM2,500 a month for basic local work, RM3,000 to RM8,000 for full scope. First local pack movement shows at 4 to 8 weeks, rankings settling around 3 to 6 months.

Petaling Jaya is an awkward place to do SEO, and most owners find that out after paying for six months of the wrong thing. The town is dense with SMEs, light manufacturers and B2B suppliers, close enough to Kuala Lumpur that half your customers do not think of themselves as being in PJ.

That geography breaks two things. Keyword planning, because the terms your buyers use are searched a few dozen times a month rather than a few thousand. And local targeting, because Google keeps deciding whether you are a PJ business or a KL one. Here is what to do about both, and what the work costs.

Petaling Jaya search behaviour is not Kuala Lumpur search behaviour

What separates PJ from KL is who is searching. KL city centre traffic skews toward consumer services and head offices. PJ carries a different mix: small and mid-sized companies in volume, a light-manufacturing and workshop belt in the older sections, professional firms in the Damansara offices, and retail clustered around a few malls.

That mix pushes PJ demand into business-to-business searches. Nobody types “industrial fastener supplier” fifty thousand times a month. A procurement executive types it once, on a Tuesday, because a line stopped. One search, one enquiry, potentially years of repeat orders.

The second difference is boundary confusion. PJ sits directly against Kuala Lumpur, and the border is not something customers hold in their heads. Someone in Bangsar looking for a service in Damansara Utama may search “near me”, may search “KL”, may search nothing geographic at all.

        The short version

        • PJ demand leans on B2B and service intent, not high-volume consumer terms.
        • Low volume with strong intent is worth more here than the reverse.
        • The KL border makes local pack targeting harder than in a standalone town.

The keywords worth owning in PJ are the ones with low volume

The standard pitch leads with a big number: a keyword with high monthly volume, a promise of page one, a quote to match. For most PJ businesses that is a trap. The term is national, contested by far larger budgets, and full of people who will never buy.

Reliable volume data for PJ-level terms is thin, so treat any figure quoted at you with suspicion, ours included. The pattern is clear enough though: terms that convert here are specific, four or five words long, and usually carry a product spec or a neighbourhood name.

Keyword type Typical volume Who is searching Worth chasing
National head term High Mixed, mostly research and competitors Rarely, unless you sell nationwide
Service plus PJ or a PJ neighbourhood Low to moderate People ready to call someone nearby Yes, first priority
B2B product spec or part description Very low Procurement, engineers, buyers with a live need Yes, highest value per visit

A page pulling twelve visits a month from procurement staff at PJ factories out-earns one pulling twelve hundred visits from students and job seekers. If your average order is in the thousands, a handful of the right visits pays the retainer. So instead of one service page trying to rank for everything, build one per product line, per specification, per problem your customers describe.

Getting the local pack right when your catchment crosses into KL

The three-result map box is where most PJ enquiries are won or lost. Google’s local ranking documentation names three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is the one you cannot change, and in PJ it does most of the damage.

If your office is in Kelana Jaya and your best customers work in Bangsar, you sit further from them than a competitor with a KL address, and Google will often show that competitor. No on-page work fixes proximity. Win your own radius first, then build prominence.

        1. Fix the address format first. “Seksyen 13” and “Section 13” both circulate, as do “SS2” and “SS 2”. Pick one and use it everywhere, postcode and state name included.
        2. Set service areas, not just a pin. If you deliver or visit sites, list the areas you genuinely serve, KL districts included.
        3. Pick the primary category by what the business is. Google’s test is whether it completes “this business IS a”, not “HAS a”.

Reviews matter more than owners expect, because prominence is the one lever left once distance is fixed. Google says on the same page there is no way to pay for a better local ranking, so any agency selling guaranteed map placement is describing something that does not exist. The mechanics sit in our guide to local SEO for Malaysian businesses.

What SEO costs in Petaling Jaya, and how it compares with KL rates

PJ owners almost always hold two quotes: one from a PJ or Damansara agency, one from a KL city-centre firm. The gap looks like a discount. Usually it is overhead.

        RM1,000-RM2,500
        basic local SEO per month
        RM3,000-RM8,000
        full-scope SEO per month
        RM800-RM2,500
        one-off SEO audit

Basic single-city local SEO runs RM1,000 to RM2,500 a month. Full-scope work in competitive industries runs RM3,000 to RM8,000. A one-off audit sits separately at RM800 to RM2,500, and most small businesses settle between RM1,500 and RM3,000.

A judgement call, stated plainly: PJ agencies tend to quote at or slightly below equivalent KL city-centre firms, and the difference looks like rent and account-manager layers rather than output. That is an observation from proposals we have reviewed, not a surveyed figure.

Below RM1,000 a month the arithmetic stops working. After tools and overheads nothing funds a writer, a developer and outreach, which is how cheap retainers become automated reporting. The tier breakdown is in our SEO pricing guide, and the city comparison in our piece on SEO services in Kuala Lumpur.

Industrial and B2B suppliers need a different content plan

The older PJ sections carry a long tail of light manufacturers, fabricators, equipment distributors and industrial service firms. They arrive at SEO late, after years on referrals, with one complaint: nobody searches for what we sell.

Partly true. Volume is low. But those searches come from people with a purchase order half-written, and they are barely contested, because the competitors also run on referrals and also have a website last touched in 2018.

What works here is unglamorous. Write a page for every product line and specification you stock, using buyer terminology rather than internal catalogue names. Publish the detail: dimensions, materials, tolerances, certification, lead times, minimum order quantities. Buyers filter on those before they call, so answering them pre-qualifies the enquiry.

Then make the enquiry path match how B2B buying works here. Procurement wants a phone number, a WhatsApp line and a quote form that does not demand a company registration number. Industrial SEO fails more often on that form than on rankings.

One caution. Do not build hundreds of near-identical pages where only the product code changes. Fewer pages with real technical content beat a catalogue dump.

Retail around Damansara and 1 Utama plays by different rules

The retail and F&B clusters behave more like conventional local SEO. Around Bandar Utama, Damansara Utama, Mutiara Damansara and Section 14, shoppers are already nearby with immediate intent. Volume is higher, competition tighter, and the local pack matters more than the blue links, because the map box fills a phone screen. The three-pack is close to the entire job.

Three things move the needle. Reviews, because prominence decides which of fifteen nearby options gets shown. Photos, because shoppers match a shopfront image against what they see from the car park. And accurate hours, since Selangor public holidays differ from the Federal Territory ones a few kilometres away.

Mall tenancy adds a wrinkle. Inside 1 Utama or any other mall, your address and the mall’s overlap, and Google frequently attaches your listing to the wrong floor. Set the pin at the entrance customers use, and write the level and lot number into the address line.

Retail here moves faster than the B2B side, because review volume builds quickly on daily foot traffic.

What a Petaling Jaya SEO retainer should deliver every month

Scope is where PJ owners get burned, because proposals describe activity rather than output. Ask for the deliverable list in writing, and for the retainer split in ringgit rather than percentages, since percentages hide how small the underlying number is. Here is how a RM4,000 monthly retainer should divide for a PJ SME in a moderately competitive niche.

        Content productionRM1,400
        Technical and on-pageRM1,000
        Link building and digital PRRM1,000
        Strategy, tools and reportingRM600

At the basic tier of RM1,000 to RM2,500, expect one or two new pages a month, on-page work on what exists, profile management, basic technical monitoring and a report. Link work is light there, and saying so is honest. At RM3,000 to RM8,000, expect four to eight pieces of content, technical work with a developer, real outreach, competitor tracking, and a strategist who revisits the plan monthly.

Two things belong in every PJ contract. You own the Google Business Profile, Search Console property and Analytics account. And the keyword list is agreed before work starts, so nobody reports page-one rankings for terms your buyers never type. The wider selection framework sits in our Petaling Jaya agency guide.

How to check a PJ agency before you sign

Most disputes trace back to the first meeting. Four questions separate agencies that understand PJ from those running a template.

        1. Ask them to name the keywords. All broad national terms, no PJ qualifiers, no B2B specifics, and they have not researched your business.
        2. Ask how they handle the KL border. A good answer covers service areas, neighbourhood content and the proximity ceiling.
        3. Ask what happens in month one. Audit, technical fixes and profile work, not content published before anyone looked at the site.
        4. Read the exit clause. Six to twelve months is normal. A notice period beyond 60 days, or a clause that removes work you paid for when you cancel, is not.

Guaranteed rankings remain the clearest red flag. Nobody controls Google’s algorithm, so a guarantee is either a bluff or a plan to rank you for terms with no demand. If the budget tops out below RM1,000 a month, buy a one-off audit and do the fixes in-house, or put the money into ads. That trade-off is in our comparison of SEO against paid ads.

What the first six months should look like

Progress in PJ arrives in steps rather than curves. Nothing happens, then a page appears at position eight, then an enquiry arrives from a term you forgot you were targeting.

Period What should be happening What to judge it on
Month 1 Audit, technical fixes, profile cleanup, keyword list agreed The fix list exists and items are closing
Months 2 to 3 First pages published, local pack movement, impressions rising Impressions and map views, not positions
Months 3 to 4 Long-tail terms entering the top ten, first organic enquiries Enquiry count and quality
Months 4 to 6 Rankings stabilising, content compounding, links landing Enquiries per month, cost per enquiry

Expect first local pack movement at 4 to 8 weeks, settled rankings at 3 to 6 months, and 6 to 12 months for the most contested Klang Valley terms. If month four arrives with no impression growth and no enquiries, ask hard questions then rather than at month twelve.

Because volume is low, traffic charts stay flat even when the work is succeeding. Judge the account on enquiries, and on which queries produce them.

Frequently asked questions about SEO agencies in Petaling Jaya

How much does an SEO agency in Petaling Jaya charge?

Basic local SEO runs RM1,000 to RM2,500 a month and full-scope work RM3,000 to RM8,000, the same ranges as the rest of the Klang Valley. A one-off audit costs RM800 to RM2,500, and most small PJ businesses settle between RM1,500 and RM3,000.

Is a PJ agency cheaper than a Kuala Lumpur one?

Often slightly, but the gap usually reflects overhead and account-management layers rather than the work. Compare deliverable lists instead of monthly totals, because a cheaper retainer with half the content output is not actually cheaper.

Should my PJ business target Kuala Lumpur keywords too?

Only if you genuinely serve KL customers. Adding KL service areas and writing content about the districts you cover is reasonable. Claiming a KL address you do not have will get the listing suspended.

Do low-volume keywords actually bring in business?

For B2B and industrial suppliers in PJ they are usually the entire opportunity. A page reaching a few procurement buyers with a live requirement beats a high-traffic page full of researchers, because deal sizes and repeat-order value are far larger.

How long before SEO shows results for a PJ business?

First local pack movement appears at 4 to 8 weeks once the Google Business Profile is complete and verified. Rankings settle at 3 to 6 months, and the most contested Klang Valley terms need 6 to 12 months. Low-volume terms often move faster.

Why does my competitor with a KL address outrank me in PJ?

Distance is one of Google’s three local ranking factors and you cannot change it. If the searcher is closer to them, they win that search. Own your own catchment completely, then build prominence through reviews and content.

Is SEO worth it for an industrial supplier with no consumer demand?

Usually yes, because the competition is weak. Most industrial suppliers in PJ have neglected websites, so specification-level pages in buyer terminology rank quickly. Judge it on qualified enquiries, not traffic, which stays low by design.

What should I refuse to sign in an SEO contract?

Refuse guaranteed rankings, a notice period beyond 60 days, any clause that removes work you paid for on cancellation, and any arrangement where the agency owns your Google Business Profile, Search Console or Analytics.

Conclusion: choosing an SEO agency in Petaling Jaya

For most businesses here the win is not a national head term. It is a set of low-volume, high-intent keywords your buyers actually type, plus a Google Business Profile built well enough to hold its own against competitors with KL addresses. Budget RM1,000 to RM2,500 a month for basic local work, RM3,000 to RM8,000 for full scope.

Bukan keyword nasional.

Tiada orang taip “supplier bearing industri” lima puluh ribu kali sebulan. Seorang staf purchasing taip sekali, hari Selasa, sebab mesin berhenti.

Local pack jadi susah bila catchment kau melintas masuk KL

          3. Pilih primary category ikut apa business kau. Ujian Google mudah: kategori tu patut lengkapkan ayat “this business IS a”, bukan “HAS a”.

Keyword volume rendah yang sebenarnya bawa duit

Pitch standard mula dengan nombor besar. Satu keyword volume tinggi, janji page one, harga ikut.

Keyword nasional yang luas Tinggi Campur, kebanyakan tengok-tengok dan pesaing Jarang, kecuali kau jual seluruh negara

Jurangnya nampak macam diskaun. Selalunya itu kos overhead, bukan kemahiran.

          RM1,000-RM2,500
          local SEO asas sebulan
          RM3,000-RM8,000
          SEO skop penuh sebulan
          RM800-RM2,500
          audit sekali bayar

Terbitkan detail teknikal: ukuran, bahan, toleransi, sijil, lead time, minimum order.

Lepas tu pastikan jalan enquiry ikut cara pembeli B2B di sini. Purchasing nak nombor telefon, line WhatsApp, dan borang quotation yang tak paksa masukkan nombor pendaftaran syarikat. SEO industri lagi kerap mati pada borang tu berbanding pada ranking.

Satu amaran. Jangan bina beratus page hampir serupa yang cuma tukar kod produk. Google dah lama tolak corak tu.

          1. Suruh dia sebut keywordnya. Kalau semua keyword nasional yang luas, tiada nama kawasan PJ, tiada spec B2B, dia belum kaji business kau.
          2. Tanya macam mana dia handle sempadan KL.

Jaminan ranking kekal red flag paling jelas.

Bulan 4 hingga 6 Ranking stabil, content berganda, link mula mendarat Enquiry sebulan, kos per enquiry

Audit sekali bayar RM800 hingga RM2,500.

Hanya kalau kau memang layan customer KL.

Keyword volume rendah betul-betul bawa business ke?

Keyword volume rendah selalunya gerak lebih laju.

English version here: SEO Agency in Petaling Jaya.

          • Google Business Profile Malaysia: Cara Daftar & Optimize

Cuba search nama servis anda plus nama pekan sendiri.

Google bagi ujian yang mudah: “select categories that complete the statement: ‘This business IS a’ rather than ‘this business HAS a’.”

Business Primary category Secondary, kalau memang betul
Kedai bunga, Ipoh Florist Gift shop
Bengkel motosikal Motorcycle repair shop Motorcycle parts store
Salon rambut Hair salon Beauty salon
Katering rumah, tiada kedai Caterer Halal restaurant
            Studio fotografi Photographer Wedding photographer

Pasal berapa banyak category patut diisi, Google minta anda “choose the fewest number of categories it takes to describe your overall core business”.

Set primary category, lepas tu biarkan sebulan sebelum nilai hasilnya.

Claim dan verify, termasuk bila poskad tak sampai-sampai

Method verify pun bukan anda yang pilih: Google tulis “verification methods are automatically determined by Google and can’t be changed.”

            1. Sedia dulu sebelum rakam. Google minta “an unedited, unique, and complete recording with no breaks”, “at least 30 seconds long”, rakam guna telefon.
            2. Tunjuk lokasi dahulu. Google minta “street signs, building numbers, nearby businesses, or familiar places”, baru signboard anda.
            3. Buktikan anda yang urus. Ayat Google: “record things only an employee can access, like opening a cash register, kitchen, storage room, or using a point-of-sale system.” Video gagal biasanya tinggal langkah ni.
            4. Tunjuk kerja, kemudian tunggu. Mesin, stok, sijil SSM. Google kata semakan “can take up to 5 business days.”

Poskad pula jalan yang paling menguji sabar. Google kata “most codes arrive within 14 days” dan kod “expire after 30 days”. Do not request a new code. If you do, we invalidate the code in the mail and send a new one.”

            panjang minimum video verify
            14 hari
            tempoh biasa poskad sampai
            5 hari bekerja

            • Taman, Tmn, Bandar, Bdr, Kampung, Kg. Peraturan sama, guna perkataan penuh di semua platform.
            • Nombor unit.

Tukang paip, mobile detailer dan katering rumah hadap soalan lain, dan jawapan Google jelas: “if you don’t serve customers at your business address, remove your address from your Business Profile.” Google benarkan “up to 20 service areas” dan kata “the boundaries of your overall area shouldn’t be more than about 2 hours of driving time from where your business is based.” Dari KL itu cukup untuk Lembah Klang, bukan Pulau Pinang.

Isi satu negeri penuh supaya nampak besar cuma nipiskan relevance.

Waktu salah tukar satu search jadi aduan.

Google juga sediakan More hours untuk “specific services with different times such as senior hours, or delivery and takeout hours”.

Google kata guna ia “if your business temporarily adjusts its hours of operation or remains closed for up to 6 days in a row”, dan untuk “7 or more days in a row” anda “should mark your business as Temporarily closed.”

Google sarankan sahkan waktu cuti walaupun tiada perubahan: “it’s a good idea to confirm your hours for official holidays, even if they’re the same as your regular hours.”

            Book free consultation

Spesifikasi Google sederhana saja: JPG atau PNG, “between 10 KB and 5 MB”, resolusi disyorkan “720 px tall, 720 px wide”. Peraturan kualiti lagi penting: gambar patut tiada “significant alterations or excessive use of filters” sebab “the image should represent reality.”

Google kata bila orang search servis yang anda tawarkan, “that service may be highlighted on your profile”, dan dalam app Maps “customers can view your full menu under ‘Services’.” Senaraikan setiap servis satu-satu. Google hadkan nama servis sendiri: “avoid including profanity, gibberish, personal information, prices, or phone numbers in custom service names.”

Post berbaloi sepuluh minit seminggu, messaging dah bertukar rupa

Google arkibkan ikut jadual: “posts older than 6 months are archived unless a date range is set.”

Messaging pula tempat panduan lama menyesatkan. Google dah tutup chat terbina: “as of July 31, 2024, the chat and call history features are no longer available in your Business Profile.”

Google kata “businesses with a claimed and verified Business Profile can add a WhatsApp or text messaging option to their contact info”, walaupun ia “are currently available for select regions”. Kalau isi dua-dua, “only the text message option will be shown”, jadi WhatsApp sahaja biasanya pilihan betul di sini.

Ruangan Questions and answers awam dilaporkan ditamatkan pada hujung 2025.

Polisi Google buang “content that has been posted due to an incentive offered by a business – such as payment, discounts, free goods and/or services”, dan juga “content that is based on a conflict of interest”, yang merangkumi pekerja sedia ada dan bekas pekerja.

Performance tempat profile berhenti jadi tekaan. Laporan yang Google panggil searches ialah “the search terms people used to find your business”, data keyword percuma paling hampir yang ada untuk business tempatan.

Istilah tu patut masuk senarai Services.

Metrik lain semuanya tindakan: call, “how many people asked for directions to your business”, klik website dan booking.

Google kata “the searches metric is updated at the start of each month” dan “it might take up to 5 days to show up”, jadi tengok pertengahan bulan lepas buat kesimpulan tiada apa berlaku itu silap.

Pendirian Google ringkas: “we may suspend or disable Business Profiles that don’t follow our guidelines.” Puncanya berulang. Keyword disumbat dalam nama. Alamat virtual office.

            1. Betulkan masalah dulu. Notis tu sebut polisi mana yang dilanggar. Appeal tanpa ubah apa-apa selalunya gagal.
            2. Sedia bukti sebelum buka borang. Google beri amaran “once you open the evidence form, you must submit it within 60 minutes or it won’t be attached to your appeal.” Scan sijil SSM, lesen dan bil utiliti dahulu.
            3. Tunggu. Google kata keputusan “can take up to 5 business days” dan arahkan “do not submit multiple appeals for the same issue before receiving a decision.”
            4. Jangan bina baru. Google tegas: “do not create a new Business Profile for the same business while your appeal is under review.”

Semakan video ambil masa sampai 5 hari bekerja mengikut Google.

Apa patut buat?

Tunggu cukup 14 hari dahulu.

Berapa banyak category patut saya pilih?

Seminimum yang benar-benar tepat. Google minta anda pilih jumlah paling sedikit yang cukup untuk gambarkan teras business, dan pilih yang melengkapkan ayat “this business IS a” dan bukan “this business HAS a”. Primary category paling penting.

Berbaloi sepuluh minit, bukan sejam.

• Google Business Profile Malaysia: The Complete Setup Guide

Short answer: A Google Business Profile is free and takes about two hours to set up properly. Verification in Malaysia is usually a video of at least 30 seconds, and Google picks the method for you. The primary category shifts visibility more than any other field. A shopfront-less business can list up to 20 service areas. Appeals take up to 5 business days.

Most Malaysian owners set up a Business Profile once, the week they open, then never touch it again. It sits there with a category chosen in thirty seconds, four photos from 2021, and hours that stopped being true years ago.

That profile is the largest free asset a local business has on Google, and it carries more rules than owners expect. This guide stays inside the profile, field by field. The wider job of citations and location pages sits in our guide to local SEO for Malaysian businesses.

Every rule below is checked against Google’s documentation. Google keeps moving profile editing around inside Search and Maps, so where a label may have moved, I say so.

Claiming and verifying, including the postcard that never arrives

Search your business name in Google Maps first. Many Malaysian businesses already have an auto-generated listing, and claiming it beats creating a duplicate. You also do not choose how you verify: Google states that “verification methods are automatically determined by Google and can’t be changed.” Most now get video.

              1. Prepare before recording. Google requires “an unedited, unique, and complete recording with no breaks”, “at least 30 seconds long”, filmed on a phone.
              2. Show location first. Google asks for “street signs, building numbers, nearby businesses, or familiar places”, then your signage.
              3. Prove you manage it. Google’s wording: “record things only an employee can access, like opening a cash register, kitchen, storage room, or using a point-of-sale system.” Rejected videos skip this.
              4. Show the trade, then wait. Equipment, stock, your SSM certificate. Google says review “can take up to 5 business days.”

Postcards are the frustrating path. Google says “most codes arrive within 14 days” and codes “expire after 30 days”. If nothing comes, the instruction that catches people is this: “Do not request a new code. If you do, we invalidate the code in the mail.”

              30 seconds
              minimum verification video
              14 days
              typical postcard arrival
              5 business days
              video review and appeal decisions

The primary category decides more than any other field you fill

If you change one thing this week, change this. The primary category tells Google which searches you are eligible for at all. A dessert cafe filed as “Restaurant” competes with every restaurant in town and wins no dessert searches.

Google gives an actual test: “select categories that complete the statement: ‘This business IS a’ rather than ‘this business HAS a’.” A tuition centre that also sells stationery is a tuition centre.

Business Primary category Secondary, if genuinely true
Tuition centre, Cheras Tutoring service Educational institution
Car detailing and coating Car detailing service Car wash
Bridal boutique with rental Bridal shop Wedding service, dress rental
Home physiotherapy, no clinic Physical therapist Home health care service
Kedai runcit with delivery Grocery store Delivery service

On how many to add, Google asks you to “choose the fewest number of categories it takes to describe your overall core business”. The public guidelines publish no hard maximum, so treat any number you read elsewhere as an interface limit that can move.

Set it, then leave it for a month before judging. Switching repeatedly resets whatever signal was accumulating.

Address, pin and service areas are three separate decisions

Malaysian addresses carry more variants than most countries, and each variant creates a separate record somewhere.

              • Jalan or Jln. Pick one, never mix. Full spelling is safer, because that is how customers type it.
              • Taman, Tmn, Bandar, Bdr, Kampung, Kg. Same rule, full words everywhere.
              • Unit numbering. “Lot 5-2” and “No. 5, Tingkat 2” are one unit reading as two.
              • Seksyen versus Section. PJ and Shah Alam circulate both, as do “SS15/4” and “SS 15/4”.
              • Postcode. One wrong digit drops your pin into the next district.

The pin is separate from the text. Check the marker sits at your door, not mid-block, and drag it if not.

Plumbers, mobile detailers and home bakers face a different question, and Google’s answer is unambiguous: “if you don’t serve customers at your business address, remove your address from your Business Profile.” Google allows “up to 20 service areas” and says “the boundaries of your overall area shouldn’t be more than about 2 hours of driving time from where your business is based.” That covers the Klang Valley from KL, not Penang, and claiming otherwise will not make you rank there.

Write the final address once in a shared document and paste it into every platform, including your website.

Hours, Ramadan and the six-day rule most owners hit

Wrong hours convert a search into a complaint. Someone drives over, finds the shutter down, and leaves a one-star review.

Regular hours sit under Edit profile, then Hours. Google also offers More hours for “specific services with different times such as senior hours, or delivery and takeout hours”.

Special hours handle exceptions, with a limit worth knowing. Google says to use them “if your business temporarily adjusts its hours of operation or remains closed for up to 6 days in a row”, and that for “7 or more days in a row” you “should mark your business as Temporarily closed.”

That rule bites during Ramadan. A month of shifted hours is not a special-hours case. Change your regular hours for the fasting month, revert after Raya, and use special hours only for days you are shut.

Public holidays vary by state, so Selangor and Johor branches need different entries. Google recommends confirming them anyway: “it’s a good idea to confirm your hours for official holidays, even if they’re the same as your regular hours.”

Photos, Products and Services earn their place differently

Photos are the part owners overwork and underplan. Google’s specifications are modest: JPG or PNG, “between 10 KB and 5 MB”, recommended resolution “720 px tall, 720 px wide”. The quality rule matters more: a photo should have “no significant alterations or excessive use of filters” because “the image should represent reality.”

The shots that get used are practical ones. Exterior from the road at eye level, because that is what a customer matches against on arrival. Interior wide shot, the counter, staff at work.

Services is the underused field. Google says that when someone searches for an offering you provide, “that service may be highlighted on your profile”, and that in the Maps app “customers can view your full menu under ‘Services’.” List each service as its own entry. Google restricts custom names: “avoid including profanity, gibberish, personal information, prices, or phone numbers in custom service names.”

Products suits retail and fixed price lists, each item carrying a photo, price and link. For a service business, Products is optional and Services is not.

Posts are worth ten minutes a week, messaging is not what it was

Posts appear under Updates, Offers and Events. Google archives them: “posts older than 6 months are archived unless a date range is set.” They are not a ranking lever, and any agency selling weekly posts as an SEO service is overstating it. They still earn ten minutes, because a post is the only fresh copy you control on the profile.

Messaging is where old guides mislead. Google shut the built-in chat down: “as of July 31, 2024, the chat and call history features are no longer available in your Business Profile.” Any tutorial telling you to answer messages in the app is outdated.

What replaced it suits Malaysia better. Google says “businesses with a claimed and verified Business Profile can add a WhatsApp or text messaging option to their contact info”, though these “are currently available for select regions”. Add both and “only the text message option will be shown”, so WhatsApp alone is usually the right call for enquiries you can track.

The public Questions and answers section was widely reported retired in late 2025. Google published no help page announcing it, so treat that as reported rather than quoted, and move common questions into Services descriptions.

Reviews are the one input you cannot buy your way through

Reviews feed prominence, the factor with the most room to move. Volume and recency both count, which is why a shop collecting a few every month out-ranks one that collected forty in 2023.

The temptation is to speed it up with a voucher. Google’s policy removes “content that has been posted due to an incentive offered by a business – such as payment, discounts, free goods and/or services”, and separately “content that is based on a conflict of interest”, which covers current and former employees. The RM10 voucher and the staff group chat both cross that line.

              What actually works

              • Ask at the moment the customer is relieved, not at the invoice.
              • Use your profile’s review short link as a QR code at the counter and a line in your WhatsApp follow-up.
              • Ask everyone. Screening for happy customers first is review gating and breaks policy.
              • Reply to every review inside 48 hours, one-star included.

Bad reviews deserve more attention than good ones. Reply in public with the specific fix and an invitation to continue privately, then stop. Every future customer reads that thread.

The Performance tab tells you which searches actually found you

Performance is where the profile stops being guesswork. The report Google calls searches is “the search terms people used to find your business”, the closest thing a local business has to free keyword data.

Read it for surprises rather than totals. Owners routinely find they are being found for a service they treat as secondary, for a competitor’s brand name, or for a Malay phrasing they never wrote down. Those terms belong in your Services list.

The other metrics are actions: calls, “how many people asked for directions to your business”, website clicks and bookings. Directions requests are the most honest walk-in proxy you have.

One timing quirk trips people up. Google notes that “the searches metric is updated at the start of each month” and “it might take up to 5 days to show up”, so checking mid-month and concluding nothing is happening is a mistake. Compare month to month, and year on year. If the report is already full of your core service, the constraint sits elsewhere, usually your website or your wider SEO budget.

What gets a profile suspended, and how reinstatement actually goes

Google’s position is short: “we may suspend or disable Business Profiles that don’t follow our guidelines.” The triggers repeat. Keywords stuffed into the name. A virtual office address. A residential address left visible for a service-area business. Multiple profiles for one location. Editing name, address and category in one week, which reads as a takeover.

              1. Fix the problem first. The notice names a policy. Appealing without changing anything usually fails.
              2. Have evidence ready first. Google warns that “once you open the evidence form, you must submit it within 60 minutes or it won’t be attached to your appeal.” Scan your SSM registration, licence and a utility bill.
              3. Wait. Google says decisions “can take up to 5 business days” and instructs “do not submit multiple appeals for the same issue before receiving a decision.”
              4. Do not rebuild. Google is explicit: “do not create a new Business Profile for the same business while your appeal is under review.”

Reinstated profiles usually return with reviews intact, though rankings take weeks to settle. That lag is the real cost. If the profile carries years of reviews, hand the appeal to someone who has done it before, which our SEO services cover.

Frequently asked questions about Google Business Profile in Malaysia

How long does Google Business Profile verification take in Malaysia?

Video reviews take up to 5 business days according to Google. Postcards are slower: most codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30. You cannot pick the method, because Google states it is determined automatically and cannot be changed.

My verification postcard never arrived. What should I do?

Wait the full 14 days first. Google warns not to request a new code, because that invalidates the one already in the mail. Avoid editing your name, address or category while a code is in transit, since Google says that stops it working.

Can I run a Business Profile from my house?

Yes, but hide the address. Google says that if you do not serve customers at your business address you should remove it and set service areas instead. You can list up to 20 areas, within roughly two hours of driving.

How many categories should I choose?

As few as genuinely apply. Google asks you to choose the fewest it takes to describe your overall core business, and to pick ones that complete the sentence “this business IS a” rather than “this business HAS a”.

Can I offer a discount for a Google review?

No. Google’s policy removes content posted due to an incentive such as payment, discounts, or free goods and services. Reviews from current or former employees are removed as a conflict of interest. Asking every customer with no reward attached is the safe method.

Why can I no longer chat with customers on my profile?

Google removed it. As of 31 July 2024 the chat and call history features are no longer available in Business Profiles. Verified businesses in supported regions can add a WhatsApp or text link to their contact info instead.

Are Google Posts worth doing every week?

They are worth ten minutes, not an hour. Posts are archived after six months unless you set a date range, and they are not a standalone ranking factor. Their value is controlling fresh copy on the profile.

How do I set Ramadan hours correctly?

Change your regular hours for the month rather than using special hours. Google limits special hours to closures or adjustments of up to 6 days in a row, and asks you to mark the business Temporarily closed beyond that.

Conclusion: the profile rewards accuracy, not cleverness

Nothing here is a trick. The profiles that win their catchment are the ones where the category is right, the address is written one way, the hours match the shutter, and every review gets an answer. That is a two-hour setup and twenty minutes a month. Businesses that lose are usually losing to a policy problem they do not know they have. • Ecommerce SEO in Malaysia: A Practical Guide for Online Stores

Short answer: Ecommerce SEO in Malaysia is won on category pages, not product pages. Most stores publish the supplier’s description word for word, let filters generate thousands of crawlable junk URLs, and never write a line on the category page people actually search for. Fix those three, add correct Product markup, and expect movement in 3 to 6 months on a basic RM1,000 to RM2,500 monthly scope.

Store owners arrive with the same complaint. They have 400 products indexed, Search Console shows impressions, and almost nothing converts.

Store SEO does not work like service-site SEO. A plumber has ten pages and one keyword each. A shop has one URL per SKU, hundreds of near-identical pages generated by colours and sizes, and a filter system quietly multiplying all of it.

Here is what is different about ranking a shop, with the WooCommerce and Shopify specifics called out where they matter.

Category pages are the real ranking assets

People do not search for SKU-2214-BLK. They search for “baju kurung moden”, “office chair Malaysia”, “tudung bawal murah”. Those are category queries, and the page that should answer them is your category or collection page.

Most Malaysian stores treat that page as a grid and nothing else. The title tag repeats the internal category name, there is no copy and no internal links. Google is left with thumbnails and prices.

The fix is unglamorous. Give each commercial category 250 to 500 words placed under the product grid so it does not push products below the fold. Answer what buyers want before they filter: which sizes or specs exist, what price bands are normal, and what shipping costs to Sabah and Sarawak.

                What a category page needs

                • A title tag built on the search phrase, not the internal category name
                • 250 to 500 words of real copy, placed below the grid
                • Links out to the subcategories sitting under it
                • A stable URL that does not change when you re-sort the menu

In WooCommerce, category descriptions live under Products, Categories, and many themes print only the short version. Shopify has the field by default, but most themes output it above the grid where it gets truncated. Check what your theme renders.

Product pages when all you have is the supplier’s description

Resellers and dropshippers hit this immediately. The supplier sends a spec sheet, you paste it, and so do the other forty stores selling the same item. Google now has forty pages with identical body copy, and it will not pick the newest store.

You cannot out-write a spec sheet by rewording it. Add what the supplier cannot: local context. Malaysian sizing notes, whether the plug is a UK three-pin, how the material behaves in humidity, real delivery timing to East Malaysia, what the warranty means on an imported unit.

Two or three original paragraphs per product is enough. Do it for the products that actually sell, not all 900. Sort by revenue, take the top 50, write those properly, and leave the long tail on supplier text with a self-referencing canonical.

A store with 50 well-written product pages and 850 thin ones performs better than a store with 900 uniformly thin ones. Google judges the page, it does not average the site.

Variants and filters quietly generate thousands of junk URLs

This is the failure that sinks the most Malaysian stores, and owners rarely see it because nothing looks broken on the front end. A shirt in 5 colours and 4 sizes is 20 combinations. Add a filter sidebar with brand, price band and material, and every combination can produce a crawlable URL. Google’s crawling documentation says this directly: crawling faceted navigation URLs tends to cost sites large amounts of computing resources because of the very large number of possible filter combinations.

Google’s stated options are to disallow the parameters in robots.txt, serve filters behind URL fragments since Search generally does not crawl fragments, put rel=”nofollow” on every link pointing at a filtered URL, or canonicalise back to the unfiltered page, which they call the weaker long-term choice. They also say to return a real 404 for empty filter combinations rather than redirecting to an error page.

Source of junk URLs WooCommerce Shopify
Filters ?filter_colour= from most filter plugins ?filter.p. on collections, edit robots.liquid
Sorting ?orderby= on every category ?sort_by= on every collection
Variants Variations share one product URL, which is safe ?variant= on the same URL, canonical handles it
Duplicate paths Optional /product-category/ permalink base /collections/x/products/y duplicating /products/y

Shopify’s collection-scoped product URLs are the one most people miss. Shopify canonicalises to the short version, so leave that alone and make sure your internal links and sitemap use the short form too.

Out-of-stock and discontinued products need a decision, not a delete

The reflex is to delete the product when stock runs out. That throws away every link and ranking the page earned.

                1. Temporarily out of stock. Keep the page live and indexable, set availability to OutOfStock in the schema, add a back-in-stock email capture. Position holds, traffic keeps arriving.
                2. Discontinued but replaced. 301 to the replacement if it is genuinely the same thing in a new model. If it is only loosely similar, redirect to the category instead.
                3. Discontinued with no replacement. Keep the page, say so in the copy, link to the closest three alternatives. Only 404 it when the page has no links and no traffic.
                4. Seasonal. Never delete. A Raya page that survives twelve months rebuilds its ranking far faster than a fresh URL every season.

On WooCommerce, hiding out-of-stock items under Products, Inventory makes those pages return a 404, so turn that setting off. On Shopify, unpublishing from the Online Store channel does the same. Archive rather than delete, and keep the URL responding.

Not sure how many junk URLs your store is generating? We will crawl it and give you the count before you commit to anything.

                Book free consultation

Product schema and review markup, as Google actually requires it

Store owners either do nothing here, or install three plugins that all output competing markup. Google’s merchant listing documentation is specific about what is required.

On the Product: name, image, and offers as a single Offer where you are the seller, not an AggregateOffer. Inside the Offer: price, which must be greater than zero, and priceCurrency as a three-letter ISO 4217 code, so MYR. Everything else is recommended rather than required, including sku, brand.name, availability, hasMerchantReturnPolicy and shippingDetails.

For variants, Google documents a ProductGroup parent carrying productGroupID, variesBy and hasVariant, with each variant a Product holding its own sku. Most stores do not need this. It matters when variants have meaningfully different prices.

Review markup has one rule people break constantly. Google’s review snippet guidance says ratings must be sourced directly from users and that you must not aggregate reviews or ratings from other websites. Pulling your Shopee star rating onto your own product page is exactly what they prohibit.

Internal linking from content to category pages

Most stores have a blog that links nowhere useful. Articles point at the homepage, occasionally at one product, almost never at the category that should be ranking. That wastes the only link equity a small store fully controls.

Write content that sits one step before the purchase and point it at the category. A guide on choosing mattress firmness links to the mattress category, not to one mattress. The article picks up informational traffic, the category collects the links, and the category is what ranks commercially.

Three rules. Link with the phrase you want the category to rank for, not “click here”. Give every category at least three inbound internal links from content. Keep top-selling categories within two clicks of the homepage, because menu depth tracks how often Google recrawls a page. Our breakdown of on-page versus off-page SEO covers why this outweighs off-site work at small scale.

Shopee and Lazada outrank your store for your own product names

This comes up in every Malaysian store audit. You search your own product name and page one is Shopee, Lazada, TikTok Shop, then maybe you at position eight.

You will not beat them on the generic product name. Those domains carry authority, review volume and crawl frequency you cannot match on a RM1,500 monthly budget. Pretending otherwise wastes a year.

Pick queries where marketplace listings are weak instead. They are thin on anything requiring explanation: comparisons, sizing guides, compatibility, warranty and after-sales. They have no physical presence, so city-modified and “near me” searches are open. And they cannot rank for your brand.

                3-6 months
                before rankings settle
                2.5s
                mobile LCP target
                RM1,000-RM2,500
                basic monthly SEO scope

If you already sell on Shopee, that listing will rank whether you like it or not, so put your brand name in it and treat the marketplace as a discovery channel feeding your own site. Adding a physical location and working your Google Business Profile opens a set of searches no marketplace can enter.

Images and site speed on a store carrying thirty plugins

Product photography is the heaviest thing on a store. The usual state is 2MB JPEGs straight from the photographer, uploaded at 3000px, displayed at 400px.

Three things matter, in order: serve the right dimensions, convert to WebP, lazy-load below the fold. Alt text matters for accessibility and image search, not for ranking the product page. Nobody renames 900 files by hand, so on WooCommerce use a bulk converter such as ShortPixel or Imagify. On Shopify the CDN handles conversion, leaving you to upload at sane dimensions and stop apps injecting extra sizes.

                Third-party scripts and appsheaviest
                Unoptimised product imagesheavy
                Theme bloat and slidersmoderate
                Hosting and server responsevaries

Aim for mobile largest contentful paint under 2.5 seconds on a category page, tested on 4G rather than office fibre. WooCommerce gives full control and full responsibility: cart fragments run sitewide by default and commonly slow category loads. Shopify removes the server question but adds app scripts you cannot always defer, where the honest fix is deleting apps. The decisions made at build stage decide how much of this you are stuck with.

Google requires product images to be crawlable and indexable. If a CDN rule or hotlink protection blocks Googlebot from your image URLs, your Product markup fails and merchant listings disappear.

Where the SEO work differs between WooCommerce and Shopify

Neither platform ranks better than the other. They fail differently, and knowing which failure mode you own saves months.

                Task WooCommerce Shopify
Titles and meta Yoast or Rank Math, full template control Theme templates, editable but limited
URL structure Fully controllable, category base removable Fixed /products/ and /collections/ prefixes
robots.txt Direct file edit Editable via robots.liquid
Product schema Plugin-generated, often duplicated Theme-generated, usually one clean copy
Content WordPress, strongest blog available Basic blog, workable but limited
Speed ceiling Depends on hosting and plugin discipline Good baseline, degrades with every app
Main risk Plugin conflicts, duplicate markup, junk URLs Fixed URL patterns, limited technical access

If you are still choosing, the cost and control trade-off is in our WooCommerce versus Shopify comparison. If the store already exists, the platform is not your bottleneck. Nobody having written the category pages is.

The first ninety days on a store that has never had SEO

                1. Week 1: count the damage. Crawl the store and compare indexable URLs against your product count. More than double your products plus categories means filters are the first problem.
                2. Weeks 2 to 3: close the taps. Handle filter and sort parameters, fix out-of-stock behaviour so pages stop 404ing, submit a clean sitemap.
                3. Weeks 4 to 6: write the top categories. Eight categories carrying the most revenue, each with a real title tag and 250 to 500 words.
                4. Weeks 6 to 9: schema and images. One source of Product markup, validated, plus a bulk conversion of the image library.
                5. Weeks 9 to 12: start content. Four articles sitting before the purchase decision, each linking into a category with its target phrase.

Expect first movement around week six to eight on the categories you rewrote, and settled positions at 3 to 6 months. Budgets sit in the same band as any retainer, which our Malaysian SEO pricing guide puts at RM1,000 to RM2,500 a month for a basic scope.

Frequently asked questions about ecommerce SEO in Malaysia

Should I optimise category pages or product pages first?

Category pages, without exception. They target the phrases people actually type, and there are far fewer of them so the work is finishable. Product pages are worth the effort only for top sellers, where search demand genuinely exists for that item by name.

What do I do if my supplier’s product description is all I have?

Keep it, then add two or three original paragraphs covering Malaysian sizing, plug type, delivery timing to Sabah and Sarawak, and warranty terms. Do this for the top fifty products by revenue, not the whole catalogue. Original content on the pages that sell beats thin content everywhere.

Do product filters really hurt my SEO?

They can. Google’s crawling documentation states that crawling faceted navigation URLs tends to cost sites large amounts of computing resources because of the very large number of possible filter combinations. Crawl effort spent on filtered URLs is effort not spent on your real category and product pages.

Should I delete a product page when the item is out of stock?

No. Keep the page live and indexable, set availability to OutOfStock in the schema, and offer a back-in-stock notification. Deleting throws away every link the page earned. Only remove a URL when the product is gone for good and the page has neither traffic nor inbound links.

What is the minimum Product schema Google requires?

For a merchant listing, Google requires name, image, and offers as a single Offer where you are the seller. Inside the Offer, price must be greater than zero and priceCurrency must be a three-letter ISO 4217 code, so MYR. Everything else, including sku, brand and availability, is recommended rather than required.

Can I show my Shopee reviews on my own site with star markup?

No. Google’s review snippet guidance says ratings must be sourced directly from users and that you must not aggregate reviews or ratings from other websites. Displaying them as plain text is fine, but marking them up as your own aggregate rating breaks the guidelines and can cost you the rich result.

Can a small store realistically outrank Shopee and Lazada?

Not on generic product names, and chasing that wastes a year. You can win on brand terms, comparison and sizing queries, compatibility questions, city-modified local searches, and anything needing explanation or after-sales service. Those are the queries marketplace listings answer badly.

How long before ecommerce SEO shows results in Malaysia?

Expect first movement six to eight weeks after category rewrites go live, and settled positions at 3 to 6 months. Stores with heavy filter problems take longer because Google must recrawl and drop the junk URLs first. Competitive Klang Valley categories run to the longer end.

                  Conclusion: ecommerce SEO in Malaysia

Ranking a Malaysian store comes down to four jobs in order: stop the filters generating junk URLs, write the category pages nobody has written, add original local detail to the products that sell, and point your content at categories instead of the homepage. Marketplaces keep the generic product names, so build on brand, comparison and local queries. Give it 3 to 6 months on a RM1,000 to RM2,500 basic scope.

Title tag ulang nama kategori dalaman, tiada copy, tiada internal link.

                  • Title tag ikut frasa carian, bukan nama kategori dalaman
                  • 250 hingga 500 patah copy sebenar, diletak bawah grid

Dua tiga perenggan asli setiap produk dah cukup.

                  3-6 bulan
                  sebelum ranking stabil
                  2.5s
                  sasaran LCP mobile
                  RM1,000-RM2,500
                  skop SEO asas sebulan

                  Punca URL sampah WooCommerce Shopify

                  3. Discontinued tanpa gantian. Kekalkan page, tulis terus terang dia dah tak dijual, link ke tiga pilihan terdekat. 404 hanya bila page tu tiada link dan tiada trafik.
                  4. Bermusim. Jangan sekali padam.

robots.txt Edit fail terus Edit melalui robots.liquid
Product schema Dari plugin, selalu bertindih antara plugin Dari theme, biasanya satu salinan bersih
Content WordPress, platform blog paling kuat Blog asas, boleh guna tapi terhad
Had kelajuan Ikut hosting dan disiplin plugin Asas bagus, merosot ikut jumlah app
Risiko utama Konflik plugin, markup bertindih, URL sampah Corak URL tetap, akses teknikal terhad

                  2. Minggu 2 hingga 3: tutup paip. Uruskan parameter filter dan sort, betulkan kelakuan habis stok supaya page berhenti 404, hantar sitemap bersih.
                  3. Minggu 4 hingga 6: tulis kategori teratas.

Category page, tanpa pengecualian.

Patutkah saya padam product page bila barang habis stok?

Separuh lagi cuma kerja periksa.

Gunanya bukan supaya kau baiki semua sendiri.

                    Tool Apa dia jawab Kos

                    2. URL Inspection. Dalam Search Console, paste lima URL paling penting satu-satu. Yang kau nak nampak ialah ayat URL is on Google. Selain tu, dia sendiri akan sebut masalahnya.
                    3. Laporan Pages. Buka Indexing, pastu Pages, baca sebab bawah Not indexed. Crawled but currently not indexed biasanya bermakna content nipis. Excluded by noindex tag bermakna ada switch tertinggal.

Berapa teruk: kritikal.

Cara check: buka mana-mana post, view source, cari perkataan canonical. Dia patut tunjuk page tu sendiri dengan alamat https penuh. Pastu tambah ?fbclid=test kat hujung URL, reload, tengok balik. Dia tak sepatutnya berubah.

                    Ringkasan

Isu HTTPS dah selesai lama dulu.

Core Web Vitals ukur rasa bila page kau loading. Google baca angka ni pada persentil ke-75 loading sebenar, diasingkan mobile dan desktop, jadi tiga suku pelawat kau kena dapat pengalaman baik sebelum kau lulus.

                    2.5s
                    LCP, content utama nampak
                    200ms
                    INP, respons bila ditekan
                    0.1
                    CLS, skor anjakan layout

Skor lab kat bawah tu alat diagnosis, bukan markah peperiksaan.

Berapa teruk: sederhana.

                    1. Tarik senarai 404. Search Console, Indexing, Pages, pastu bahagian Not found.

                    1. Setiap versi senarai semua versi, termasuk dirinya. Google nyatakan setiap versi bahasa mesti senaraikan dirinya sendiri dan semua versi lain.
                    2. Link balik kena dua hala. Google terus terang pasal akibatnya: kalau dua page tak tunjuk antara satu sama lain, tag tu akan diabaikan.
                    3. Betulkan kod bahasa. Bahasa guna ISO 639-1, region pilihan dan guna ISO 3166-1 Alpha 2. Bahasa Melayu ialah ms. Kod my tu Burma, dan inilah silap paling biasa atas website Malaysia. Guna ms-MY dan en-MY, jangan sesekali kod negara sorang-sorang.
                    4. Tambah x-default.

Structured data bagitahu Google apa isi page tanpa dia perlu tafsir ayat kau.

Pagination pula meliputi mana-mana siri page-2: archive blog, senarai category, grid produk.

Urutan Check Kesan kalau rosak Siapa baiki
1 Indexation dan coverage Traffic jadi sifar Marketing
2 Robots.txt dan sitemap Seksyen penuh hilang Developer
3 HTTPS dan paparan mobile Ranking dan conversion jatuh Developer
4 Canonical dan duplicate Signal pecah, tak rank Marketing
5 hreflang, kalau dua bahasa Salah bahasa dihidang Developer
6 Redirect dan link rosak Nilai hilang lepas rebuild Marketing
7 Core Web Vitals dan gambar Conversion perlahan Dua-dua
8 Structured data dan pagination Peluang terlepas Marketing

                      Soalan lazim pasal technical SEO

Kod my tu Burma, dan itulah silap hreflang paling biasa atas website Malaysia. Kalau nak tanda bahasa dan negara sekali, ms-MY yang betul. Google tak terima kod negara berdiri sendiri.

Skor PageSpeed Insights 100 berbaloi dikejar tak?

Tak.

Tengok mana?

Mula dengan redirect. Tarik senarai Not found dalam Search Console, semak sama ada URL lama masih sampai ke page baru yang betul dalam satu lompatan, dan cari mana-mana yang diredirect beramai-ramai ke homepage. Lepas tu check indexation, sebab setting staging selalu terbawa masa launch.

English version here: Technical SEO Checklist for Malaysian Businesses.

                    • Technical SEO Checklist for Malaysian Businesses (2026)

Short answer: You can run a useful technical SEO checklist yourself with three free tools: Google Search Console, PageSpeed Insights and the Rich Results Test. Work through the checks in priority order, starting with indexation and ending with pagination. The performance numbers to hit are 2.5s for LCP, 200ms for INP and 0.1 for CLS. Most Malaysian sites fail on duplicate URLs and hreflang long before they fail on speed.

Technical SEO gets sold as a developer job, and half of it is. The other half is checking, and an owner or a marketing executive can do that in an afternoon without touching code.

The point is not that you fix everything yourself. It is that you walk into the next conversation with your developer holding a list of specific broken things instead of a complaint that the site feels slow.

The checklist runs in order of damage: the first items can remove your site from Google, the last ones cost a little crawl efficiency.

The three free tools you need before you start

Nothing below requires paid software. Semrush and Ahrefs make it faster, and neither is needed to find the faults.

                      Tool What it answers Cost
Google Search Console Is the page indexed, which pages Google skipped and why, sitemap and hreflang errors Free, one-time setup
PageSpeed Insights Core Web Vitals from real Chrome users, plus the files slowing the page Free, no login
Rich Results Test Whether your structured data is valid and what it qualifies for Free, no login
Browser view-source Canonical tags, hreflang tags, meta robots Free, installed

If Search Console is not set up on your domain, stop and set it up first. Nothing else here is worth doing while you are guessing at what Google sees. Verification takes a developer about ten minutes through DNS or your hosting panel, and it is a one-off job.

Every check carries a tag for who fixes it. Marketing means someone comfortable in the WordPress dashboard. Developer means server access or theme code.

Checks 1 and 2: indexation and Search Console coverage

A page that is not indexed cannot rank. This is the only failure on the list that takes your traffic to zero, so it goes first.

                      1. Site search. Search Google for site:yourdomain.com and compare the count against how many pages you think you published. A gap of ninety percent means something is blocking Google.
                      2. URL Inspection. In Search Console, paste your five most important URLs into the inspection bar one at a time. You want the words URL is on Google. Anything else names its own problem.
                      3. Pages report. Open Indexing, then Pages, and read the Not indexed reasons. Crawled but currently not indexed usually means thin content. Excluded by noindex tag means someone left a switch on.

How bad is it: critical. The most common cause is a staging site that went live with WordPress still set to discourage search engines. Settings, then Reading, then untick the box. That one tick has cost businesses whole quarters of traffic. Who fixes it: marketing for the WordPress setting, developer if a server rule is doing it.

                      Checks 3 and 4: sitemap and robots.txt

Your XML sitemap lists the URLs you want crawled. Your robots.txt lists the paths you do not. Between them they tell Google where to spend its time.

Load yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml in a browser. Yoast and Rank Math both generate one automatically. Check that the URLs listed are the live versions, not old HTTP or non-www ones, and that deleted pages are gone.

Then load yourdomain.com/robots.txt. The line that ends careers is Disallow: / with nothing after it, which asks every crawler to ignore the whole site. Confirm your sitemap is referenced there on a Sitemap: line.

Then submit the sitemap under Sitemaps in Search Console and read the status.

How bad is it: a broken robots.txt is critical. A missing sitemap is minor for a fifty-page site and serious for a shop with two thousand product URLs. If you are still planning the build, settle both before launch. Who fixes it: marketing for the sitemap plugin, developer for robots.txt.

Check 5: canonical tags and the duplicate URLs WordPress creates

WordPress is generous with URLs. One article is reachable through the post URL, a category archive, a tag archive, an author archive, a date archive, and any URL carrying a tracking parameter. Google then picks one.

The rel=canonical tag tells it which. Google treats this as a strong signal rather than an order, and says to use absolute paths rather than relative paths, with a self-referential canonical on the canonical page itself.

To check, open any post, view source, search for canonical. It should point at that page with the full https address. Add ?fbclid=test, reload, and look again. It should not have changed.

                      The short version

                      • Self-referencing canonical on every indexable page, absolute URL.
                      • Tag and date archives usually deserve noindex.
                      • Tracking parameters must not change the canonical.
                      • Never canonicalise a Malay page to its English twin.

How bad is it: moderate to serious. Signals split across four versions of a page means none of them ranks. Who fixes it: marketing, through Yoast or Rank Math, or a developer if the theme hardcodes canonicals.

Not sure which of these your site is failing? We will run the full checklist against your domain and send you the list.

                      Book free consultation

Checks 6 and 7: HTTPS, mixed content and mobile rendering

HTTPS is settled. If your site still loads on plain HTTP, browsers mark it Not secure and conversion drops before ranking enters the argument. Most Malaysian hosts include a free Let’s Encrypt certificate, so the cost argument is gone.

The subtler failure is mixed content: the page loads over HTTPS but pulls an image, script or font over HTTP. Press F12, open the Console tab, and look for mixed content warnings. On WordPress this usually comes from old image URLs left in the database after a migration.

For mobile, resize your browser to phone width and use the site as a customer would. Google crawls with a smartphone agent, so the mobile version is the one indexed. Check that the phone number is tappable, forms work with a thumb, text needs no pinching, and no popup covers the screen on arrival.

How bad is it: mixed content is moderate and worsens as browsers block more of it. Broken mobile rendering is critical. The same rules appear on our business website checklist. Who fixes it: developer for the certificate, marketing for an intrusive popup.

Checks 8 and 9: Core Web Vitals, image weight and formats

Core Web Vitals measure what loading your page feels like. Google reads them at the 75th percentile of real page loads, split between mobile and desktop, so three quarters of visitors must have a good experience before you pass.

                      2.5s
                      LCP, main content visible
                      200ms
                      INP, response to a tap
                      0.1
                      CLS, layout shift score

Largest Contentful Paint should happen within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint within 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift should stay at 0.1 or below. The thresholds are published on Google’s web.dev. INP replaced First Input Delay in 2024, so any checklist still asking for FID is out of date.

On most Malaysian SME sites the biggest cause is one hero image exported straight from a camera.

                      Camera JPEG, unresized3,000 KB
                      Resized JPEG, 1600px400 KB
                      Same image as WebP150 KB

Those figures are typical, not universal. Anything over 300 KB deserves a second look, and images need width and height attributes or the browser cannot reserve space and CLS suffers.

To check, run your homepage and one service page through PageSpeed Insights and read the real-user panel at the top. The lab score below it is a diagnostic, not a grade.

How bad is it: moderate. Speed is a tiebreaker between pages of similar quality, and matters more for conversion than ranking. Who fixes it: marketing for images and unused plugins, developer for the rest.

Checks 10 and 11: redirect chains and broken internal links

Site rebuilds are where Malaysian businesses quietly lose rankings. The site launches, the URL structure changes, and either nobody maps the old URLs to the new ones or the mapping gets layered over years until one URL passes through four hops.

A redirect chain is a URL that redirects to a URL that redirects again. Each hop adds latency and dilutes the signal. You want one hop, old URL to final URL, on a 301 rather than a 302.

                      1. Pull the 404 list. Search Console, Indexing, Pages, then Not found. Broken internal links show up here too: a link on your own site pointing at a page that no longer exists.
                      2. Decide per URL. If a replacement exists, 301 to it. If nothing equivalent exists, leave the 404 and remove the internal links pointing at it. Do not redirect everything to the homepage.
                      3. Fix the source links. Editing the link in the old article beats relying on the redirect.
                      4. Retest. Paste the old URL into a redirect checker and confirm it reaches the destination in one hop.

How bad is it: serious after a rebuild, minor on a stable site. Who fixes it: marketing for internal links and plugin redirects, developer for server rules and bulk mapping.

Check 12: hreflang on a bilingual Malaysian site

This is the check that matters most for anyone publishing the same article in Bahasa Melayu and English, and the one Malaysian sites most often get wrong. This article has a Malay twin, so these are rules we run on ourselves.

Start with structure. Google says to use different URLs for each language version rather than cookies or browser settings, and warns against automatically redirecting users between language versions, because that can stop both users and search engines seeing all of them. A header language switcher is correct. An IP-based redirect forcing a visitor into the Malay page is not.

Google accepts three equivalent methods: HTML tags in the head, HTTP headers, or sitemap entries. Pick one and use it consistently. The rules that break implementations:

                      1. Every version lists every version, itself included. Google states that each language version must list itself as well as all the others.
                      2. Return links must be mutual. Google is blunt: if two pages do not both point to each other, the tags will be ignored.
                      3. Get the code right. Language is ISO 639-1, region optional and ISO 3166-1 Alpha 2. Malay is ms. The code my is Burmese, the most common error on Malaysian sites. Use ms-MY and en-MY, never a country code alone.
                      4. Add x-default. It catches users whose language settings match none of your versions. Point it at your English page.
                      5. Keep canonicals in-language. Google says to specify a canonical page in the same language. Each version self-canonicalises. Canonicalising the Malay page to the English one deletes it from the index.

Translated content is not duplicate content, so publishing both versions is safe. And hreflang adds no ranking power. It decides which of your pages gets shown to which searcher.

How bad is it: serious on a bilingual site, irrelevant on a single-language one. Who fixes it: developer for the tags, owner for deciding which languages you commit to maintaining.

Checks 13 to 15: structured data, pagination, and the order to fix everything

Structured data tells Google what a page is about without it interpreting your prose. It raises no rankings by itself, but a result with stars or an FAQ dropdown takes more screen than the one above it. Four types earn their keep: LocalBusiness with address, hours and phone, supporting your local search work; Organization on the homepage; Article on posts; and Product with price in MYR if you sell online. Test with the Rich Results Test, and obey the hard rule: markup must describe what a visitor can see.

Pagination covers any page-2 sequence: blog archives, category listings, product grids. Google retired rel=next and rel=prev, so each paginated page needs its own self-referencing canonical rather than one pointing back to page one. Page numbers should be real links, because a load-more button driven only by JavaScript leaves later pages uncrawled.

Priority Check Damage if broken Who fixes
1 Indexation and coverage Traffic to zero Marketing
2 Robots.txt and sitemap Sections invisible Developer
3 HTTPS and mobile rendering Ranking and conversion drop Developer
4 Canonicals and duplicates Signals split, nothing ranks Marketing
5 hreflang, if bilingual Wrong language served Developer
6 Redirects and broken links Lost equity post-rebuild Marketing
7 Core Web Vitals and images Slower conversion Both
8 Structured data and pagination Missed visibility Marketing

Work top down and stop when the next fix costs more than it returns. None of this substitutes for the content and links covered in the basics of how SEO works. If you would rather someone ran it monthly, our SEO services page explains how, and the SEO pricing guide covers the cost.

Frequently asked questions about technical SEO

How often should I run this checklist?

Quarterly for a stable site, and immediately after any redesign, migration or hosting change. Check indexation monthly, because that is the one failure that can wipe out traffic between quarters. Point Search Console alerts at an address someone reads.

Do I need a developer for all of this?

No. About half the list sits in the WordPress dashboard: search engine visibility, canonical settings in your SEO plugin, image compression, internal links and basic structured data. HTTPS, robots.txt, server redirects and hreflang tags usually need a developer.

What are the Core Web Vitals numbers I should aim for?

Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint at 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift at 0.1 or below. Google reads these at the 75th percentile of real page loads, split between mobile and desktop.

Will publishing the same article in Malay and English get me penalised?

No. Google treats translated content as separate content, not duplicate content. Each version needs its own URL and hreflang annotations that point at each other. What does cause harm is canonicalising one language version to the other, which removes it from the index.

Which language code should I use for Bahasa Melayu?

Use ms, the ISO 639-1 code for Malay. The code my is Burmese and is the most common hreflang error on Malaysian sites. If you want language and country, ms-MY is correct. Google does not accept a country code alone.

Is a perfect PageSpeed Insights score worth chasing?

No. The lab score is a diagnostic, not the metric Google uses. What counts is the field data at the top of the report, gathered from real Chrome users. Going from passing Core Web Vitals to a green 100 rarely pays for itself.

My site was rebuilt last year and traffic never recovered. Where do I look?

Start with redirects. Pull the Not found list in Search Console, check whether old URLs still resolve in one hop to the right new page, and look for anything mass-redirected to the homepage. Then check indexation, because staging settings often survive launch.

Does structured data improve my rankings?

Not directly. It helps Google understand the page and can qualify your result for a richer display, which raises click-through from the same position. Treat it as presentation rather than ranking. The markup must describe content a visitor can actually see.

Conclusion: run the list, then hand over what you cannot fix

Most technical SEO problems on Malaysian business sites are mechanical, and most are visible in half a day with free tools. Indexation, canonicals and hreflang cause more lost traffic than page speed ever will, which is the opposite of how the work gets sold. Run the checks in order, fix what sits in your dashboard, and give your developer a specific list.
