Digital Marketing Basics for Malaysian Businesses
Start here if you're new to digital marketing. Core terms, channels, and budgeting basics.
Five words to learn before you spend anything
Most of the confusion in digital marketing is vocabulary, not strategy. Learn these five and most agency conversations stop being intimidating.
Lead. A real enquiry from someone who might buy. Not a like, not a follower, not a page view. What a lead actually is, and in Malay, apa itu lead.
CPL. Cost per lead. Total spend divided by the number of enquiries. The single most useful number for a small business, because it tells you what a customer conversation costs you.
ROAS. Return on ad spend. Revenue divided by ad spend. A ROAS of 3 means every RM1 in brought RM3 back. Whether 3 is good depends entirely on your margin. Benchmarks here, or apa itu ROAS yang bagus.
Conversion. The action you want. A form filled, a WhatsApp sent, a purchase. If you have not defined it, nothing downstream can be measured.
Funnel. The path from never heard of you to paid you. Different channels do different parts of it. Nothing does all of it.
What each channel is actually for
Search captures demand that already exists. Someone is looking for what you sell today. Social creates demand among people who were not looking. Email and WhatsApp work the list you already have, which is usually the cheapest revenue in the business and the most ignored. Your website is where all three land, and it decides whether any of them were worth paying for.
Pick by where your buyers already are, not by which platform you personally enjoy. Longer version: channels explained and channel mana sesuai.
How much to budget
Two separate numbers. Media spend goes to the platforms. Someone to run it is a freelancer, an agency retainer or a salary. Agency retainers in Malaysia run roughly RM1,000 to RM3,000 for a freelancer, RM3,000 to RM8,000 for a boutique agency, and RM8,000 upward for an established one. Ours are on the pricing page.

The order that works
First, the foundation. A website that can take an enquiry and tracking that records it. Skip this and every number after it is a guess.
Then paid. Ads give you readable data in weeks. You learn which offer and which audience actually respond, at a cost you control.
Then organic. SEO and content take months but keep working after you stop paying. Start them once paid has told you what people actually want.
The mistake almost everyone makes first
Buying a channel before deciding the offer. An ad account cannot fix an unclear proposition, and a beautiful feed cannot fix a price nobody wants to pay.
The second most common one: nobody assigned to answer enquiries. Leads go cold in hours, not days. If no one on your side picks up the WhatsApp the same day, spend the money on hiring that person first.
